Need some help, currently running iAntiVirus which has detected and removed one virus/phish/trojan horse etc. but i think my MacBook (running OS X Version 10.6.8) may still be infected.

I've downloaded iNet and it's detected something called MyMacAttack does anyone know what this is? And more importantly how to remove it if its the problem?

Also any advice on the best software to protect my laptop from all the nasty things which may infect it?

You need to move an operating system that nobody else uses to be 100% safe. I believe GeekUX plus is very good. The slight snag is that you won't be able to connect the internet till someone writes a browser app for it. On the plus side you will never get any malware on your computer ----EVER. ;)

ps Sorry can't help with your request-- not familiar with OX op system :o but I'm sure there are many on here who are.:thumb:

iNet is a network scanner is it not. So what is it detecting as 'MyMacAttack'? Is this something on your computer or elsewhere on your network?

I think that the anti-virus kicked off when iNet was downloaded.

I ran a google search for "MyMacAttack" and didn't find anything at all with relation to it being a name of a virus.

I also took a look at the website for iAntiVirus, which seems to have stopped being worked on/updated in 2009.

I'm wondering whether this is one of those fake AV programs that invents issues to ensure that you pay to get them fixed.

Maybe not, but my googling hasn't brought forth any information.

ClamXAV does the job for me. Tested it on some known virus patterns and it caught them all. Just google it.

I use MacScan2 - not free, but well worth it. Not that it ever had anything to catch, apart from a few naughty cookies ...

Theres no such thing as viruses for Macs. Macs are great - windows suck.

It's funny but I don't hear the Mac evangelists shouting quite so loudly now about it.

I'm neither but I always enjoy hearing how Macs never have any problems and never get viruses, as I sit and fix stupid problems in a room full of Macs.

The irony of it is never lost on me.

I'm not that computer literate so you'll have to 'walk' me through this if possible?
iNet is showing it as a host for Apple File Sharing, File Transfer and Window File Sharing.

Apologies for my ignorance.

If you have any other devices (like another computer e.g. laptop) which connects to your router, ensure they are all switched off.

If you then run this scanner and it can still see it, MyMacAttack is likely to be hosted on your Mac.

I don't know much about, nor does it seem to be a threat, so it could be innocent.

However, without knowing, I would err on the side of it being dodgy.

Follow spinaltap's recommendation and get Sophos installed, updated and run a full scan so see what that finds...

Mac Attack is malware. Discovered in 2011. Doesn't do anything other than make you paranoid, so you go out and buy security solutions for the Mac. Totally overkill for the domestic user IMHO.

If you boot in single user mode (hold command-s when booting up), does it appear in your antivirus?

best way; don't visit dodgy sites!!:D

while on this topic; I use 'cleanmymac' which is awesome at removing old remnants of installation files etc etc and generally really making your mac fly like the day it was bought... highly recommended.
for the unscrupulous few here's a link to another way of getting it...
How to get CleanMyMac Free + KeyGen (No Torrents) - YouTube

I don't think the free Sophos Antivirus product will set Swannymere back too much...

;)

No, but it wont cost and may remove it - which makes life easy.

If it doesn't, further investigation is required...
