As well as my other hobbies; Motorcycles, horses, photography and of course Mercs, I'm also a bit of an anorak when it comes to flying things. I have enjoyed flying the real things as I have built one or two plastic ones. I cleaned my corner cabinet the other day and converted the lighting to LEDs. Thought one or two might be interested in its contents...
Miniature version of Duxford, especially the USA hanger! My one was RC models, I built and repaired them, son flew and crashed them. Still have loads of stuff in the garage loft including a half built low wing sport plane and the unopened kit for an 8ft wingspan pre war low wing open cockpit low wing sport plane, kit cost £150 in about 1993, plane fetured on the cover of RCM&E one month!
Bizarrely enough I ever did the RC thing not that I'm not interested. In fact it's been a long time since I built any of these. Just don't get the time these days
Ah Duxford, I miss the place. Was a 'Friend of Duxford' but living nigh on 600 miles away now, I do t get there that often these days.
... I have a very understanding, long suffering misses ... Most girlies would have a fit if they saw the kitchen surfaces streun with this lot! (was temporary while I worked on the cabinet ) Luckily she was at work.
Yeah always been interested in planes. Used to build models when I was a kid and have an unbuilt Spitfire kit in the cupboard that was a gift from last Christmas. Don't know if I've ever built them as well as you clearly have, nice collection.
Well, it is hanging from the ceiling......but it’s a real one! (New Orleans WW2 museum) Count me in as an enthusiast, flyer, ex ground engineer (avionics), still flogging my way around the globe!
Edd Thank you for posting. Great looking models there. It takes me back to the early sixties and 2/6 Saturday pocket money. That would buy most of the smaller Airfix kits. Two weeks worth of pocket money would graduate one into Lancaster’s etc. The glue always came in tubes which were designed to spit the stuff onto the clear plastic canopies But I loved them. In my later years I stuck with it (excuse the pun) and moved into Tamiya F1 kits, air brushes etc. I am looking for a large scale Fokker Tri-plane detailed model? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I remember those days well. I too started very young and I'm sure the quality of the builds for me was rubbish. Always favoured the 12th scale aircraft latterly. I still have all my tools, paint etc but sold my lovely Testers airbrush and compressor. Also built the big 12th scale Tamyia F1 kits.... Ive half my favourites, the Spitfire being number one and the SR-71...
Little bit of detail on my trumpeter rendition of the Messerschmitt Stiftung's fantastic BF109 G10. (this one used to be at Duxford many moons ago) .....
When I was a teenager, I built this: 1/24.... mammoth of a project. It even had a tiny electric motor behind the propeller (with the AA batteries hidden inside the stand).
Yes my Stuka as the little motor I. It. As does the huge Mosquito I have. Doesn't fit in the cabinet though
Currently involved in building a Zenair 750 STOL - full size, at Aerobility which is a flying charity for the disabled. We started building in February this year and have no end date, just see how it goes. The whole idea is for as many disabled people as possible to get involved in the build, handling tools and reading drawings etc. led by people with rhe relevant experience. Fuselage and tail assembly is completed already and we hope to begin work on the wings soon. Rotax have donated an engine at a vastly reduced price and Garmin have given us a complete glass cockpit assembly.
