Are these wheels too big?

I have found a set of almost new AMG III wheels with tyres but looking at the fitment guide it looks as if they are probably too wide. The wheels in question are 8 1/2J offset ET30 and 9 1/2J offset ET33. Is there any tyre combination that will work with my 2000 model W202. Very disappointed if they don't fit they are a bargain price and I tried one on the car and it looked amazing. The wheels are currently fitted with 255/40 and 285/35 and they are massive so I couldn't really tell if they would be any good.
Hope someone can help.
Thanks

I have the exact wheels you are talking about (assuming they are 18's) fitted to my '98 SLK230. They were originally off a SL500 and fitted with similar tyres to yours.
I fitted 225.40.18 on the front (8.5) rim and 255.35.18 on the rear (9.5) rim, they look fine, maybe a little stretched. I get a tiny bit of rubbing on the front both l&r on full lock if the road is uneven, other than that they are perfect. The rubbing is probably down to the fact that my car is lowered too.

The tyres I fitted are Falken 452's, all four came in at around £350 from Camskill. I've done about 3.5k miles on them now and have no complaints, quiet, good grip wet or dry, and they seem to be wearing well. HTH.

PS, I think you will have to get new wheel bolts, I did, as the radius on the AMG wheel bolt is different from the standard SLK wheel bolt, with a set of lockers they cost around 60-70 quid.

Here is a pic of them fitted on my car.

Thanks for the info Billy. Yes, they look like the same wheels, I can't believe that I didn't say they were 18 inch. I am still not sure if they would be right for my car, for one thing I asked the dealers part dept and they can not find any wheels wider than 8.5 inch listed for my car. Also I must admit when I tried one on the rear even though I know it had too wide a tyre on it the width looked a bit ridiculous on my car, after all it is just an "oiler". They look absolutely brilliant on your car however as it looks the part. I am thinking about going no larger than 17 x 7.5 rims, they should look and fit just that bit better. So unfortunately the other wheels will have to go back into the dark and dusty corner where they have been lying, what a waste of lovely wheels and tyres.
Thanks again
Dave
