Are they standard tints on the front? Also scratched.

It seems like the tints on the front of the CLS are pretty illegal, but they also seem like a factory option, and I've seen the same level of tint on almost all other CLS (the few times I've seen them). Did they really come from the factory that dark? I'm sure they would be more than 30% which I think is the limit?

Also, I'm getting some horrible vertical scratches on the inside of them, more on the passenger side - as if something inside the door is scratching it. Anyone else got this? Can they be repaired in any way?

Factory fitted privacy tints will be glass not film, so shouldn't scratch.

my 219 has factory tints and are a film of some sort. Lighter at the front than the rear

What leads you to believe it's a film?

Mine's not exactly a film it's like it's bonded to the glass, the edges can be picked at and it flakes in tiny pieces. You couldn't peel it off.

It's a 2012 ? it has passed MOT before , right ? Ask a friendly police officer to test them for you...if you dare. Scratches ? not sure about that bit. My wife's ancient Zafira has aftermarket tints we had done locally over 12 years ago....not a single scratch anywhere.

    My, 2011 E class coupe,
also has vertical scratches on the 2 front windows, is your CLS pillerless?
I've put those scratches down to the car being pillerless, never had them on any other car and believe me I've had some! Must admit they are annoying. I'm thinking about getting smoked tints all round but I think the tints would show the scratches even more. I'll post some pics tommorow.

It's really difficult to get a picture of a window, had to use my finger as a focus.

Anyway, this makes it look a lot like a stuck on film, but you can see where I've tried peeling it and little bits have flaked off:

And on this one you can just about see the scratch down the middle:

Yup, looks like a film. Not factory fitted, as I'm pretty sure MB only use coloured glass to provide the tint, even on dark privacy tints.

Definitely a film. And re scratch, I have them too on the drivers side although not as bad as yours. I can only assume something may have gotten stuck on the glass and it was wound down. Sand etc. Had no issues for the longest time and then it happened

Its a film, heat it up with a hairdryer then wet it with soapy water and it will peel off.

It’s a film, as mentioned before mercedes tints are darkened glass, if that makes any sense.

You've answered you own question! The fact that you can peel it demonstrates that it's a film on top of the glass, not bonded in like a factory option. Any 'tinter' worth their salt will be able to remove and reapply whatever you want... Just google 'auto window tint service' for someone local.
