Arnold Clark poised to buy J R WEIR GROUP

What's wrong with Western at Newbridge?

Anyone got any experience of Newbridge? I anticipate going there for my serving now.

I've only ever bought a part from Western. Weren't bad though.

emailled using the form on their website. they called back to confirm, let me know when it was in etc. Decent service but hardly conclusive.

Shame about Weir though. Grangemouth is just down the road from me. That now means 'uncle arnold' will have another huge dealership on top of all the others in that area. I think Phoenix Honda will be going it alone soon!

They are very expensive compared to the other dealers and when questioned i got a reply " its Edinburgh prices".

For servicing , ive not had any complaints with MB Glasgow tbh.

From a sales point of view i would imagine AC will have a big impact quickly. Que the open boots , flags , baloons etc which are prob being blown up as we speak.

From the servicing point of view , i still use Harry Fairbairn for BMW which is now AC. The servicing staff there are great as they are mostly the original staff. I don't think you will have much to worry about from a servicing point of view.

On a side note , AC recently bought Phoneix bmw in kircaldy . So the empire into the prestige is growing. Who's going to be the audi casualty? Perth Audi ? i think they are still quite small so most likely.

They did however loose the lexus franchise to the Eastern western motor group a few years back tho :)

I've just traded in a '59 plate 320d for my Merc, and when it came to servicing, the BM wouldn't go within 100 miles of Fairbairns, not since they became a part of Arnold Clarks. I know a couple of the directors of Fairbairns - Arnold's stooges and I well believe the rumours I was told that BMW didn't want Arnold directly involved with the BMW brand. Never in a million years will a car of mine be touched by anyone connected with the Arnold Clark organisation. Wouldn't give them the steam off my p**s :wallbash:
'nuff said!

Absolutely nothing. I've heard that they're pretty good. Only downside is that they can be expensive. My ex-neighbour told me that he could get his E250 serviced for less at Park Lane... Prestige central London location versus industrial estate on the edge of Edinburgh. Go figure

I'm going to try Newbridge too. Have used JRWeir for servicing and purchases for last 3 years but no more given the involvement of AC.

As you'll know with Service Care you can visit any dealership so that just leaves the other jobs. Grangemouth charge £100+VAT per hour for labour.

No , city centre.

Ive not had any issued with them tbh.

I used to use Ian Philp in giffnock and used to go to giffnock when chas worked there , but swtiched to the city centre.

Since I started the ball rolling I feel I should perhaps inject a slight note of caution to all those who have sworn never to darken J R WEIR's door ever again. At least in the short term I imagine things will continue much as before---- same reception and sales staff---- same service personnel. If you found them OK to deal with before then you could be "cutting off your nose to spite your face" if you assume it will all suddenly change for the worse overnight. Inevitably the top management will change in the course of time but it will be a gradual process. This is Arnold Clark's first Mercedes dealer network so if he is wise  he will tread carefully at first. Key to this will be retaining their existing good staff. Despite all the " prophets of doom" forebodings which may indeed prove right I think would be wise in the meantime just to "wait and see" . The jury is out on this one methinks ! :dk:

Bugger.

Just as my E63 is due for a service. I'm in Aberdeen and the dealership is really close to where I work, so driving a couple of hundred miles just to have it serviced by someone else doesn't make much sense.

Wonder if they'd let me watch them work on it just so I can keep my eye on them....

Anyone seen any changes at Grangemouth ?

My E class is due a service and with Grangemouth only 15 minutes away it's the obvious choice asssuming they haven't been Arnold Clarkified.

Has anoyone used an ex J R Weir garage since the takeover? I'm due a service but previous experience of Arnold Clark puts me off. I've used J R Weir for the past four services (Grangemouth) but wonder if Edinburgh Eastern/Western would be better than Arnold Clark.

I really doubt a change of the owners will have filtered down to the customer experience as yet. If they were good before they will probably still be so, if they were rubbish I think the same will be true.

You have to remember Arnold Clark are massive. They will have many more satisfied customers that DON'T post on forums than unsatisfied ones that like an online rant..

I'm a long standing and very pleased customer of the Grangemouth garage.

The parts and service team haven't changed (yet) - Stuart in the service team is excellent and Fraser in parts is always keen to help. The last time they serviced my 300ce I got to watch on the side line and got underneath it when it was up on the ramp.

I will be keeping an eye on how they change and wonder if the 'free' valet and sweets will cease with the new owners...

Arnold Clark are terrible - feel sorry for those who worked for JR Weir - many moons ago i worked for RFS (Renault Financial Services) and I would say that 80% of complaints came from owners who bought from Arnold Clark....

Yes, used Grangemouth for 2 x "B" services @ about 6,500 miles on 2 x E250. Price was fixed at £369 which was a bit less than Western were quoting.

Cars were collected then dropped off again and were washed and the "free sweets" were in the car.

A lady I've never heard of called to say that the combination filters were needing changed but I pointed out this was part of the service so no need to tell me that.
No noticeable difference, the lady said one needed "wiper blades" which I declined the offer for them to fit after all "I never drive the car in the rain". ;)

Have to agree with comments about Stuart, excellent. :thumb:

Thanks for the replies, car is now booked in with Grangemouth - I will report back afterwards

I was just a bit apprehensive as I was less than impressed a few years ago when I owned an Alfa with Arnold Clark's Perth Alfa dealer.

I think what I might do is drop them an email and say you have some concerns re their acquisition and ask for re-assurance that you'll get the usual good service.

Then if something does go wrong you can ask for the person who replied that of course the service would be excellent and point to the email.

I did a similar thing with a hotel I'd booked in the US which then got a run of poor TripAdvisor reports. The Customer Services Manager took care of us while we were there, upgraded the room (I've never had a room with three balconies before!) brought us fruit and flowers several times during the stay and then waived the resort fee.
