Hi, I'm abit late on this one as I've only just noticed the thread.
My question is this:
If Mercedes /AMG recommend Mobil 1, why do they only supply Shell Helix Ultra in their workshops and not use Mobil 1 as stated on the slam-panel of the car?

Hi Pat, yes, sorry for chipping in after the deadline!
This issue with Shell/Mobil has always bugged me. I asked a couple of people at MB and they just said that Shell is what they use and that they never use Mobil 1.
I researched Shell Helix Ultra abit and from what I can make out, Shell HU has been approved by Mercedes and has been used by them for some time now.

I would very much like to know what you/ others think about this.

Thanks again, Pat.

I'd say the only reason an MB dealer would use Shell over Mobil is that they get a better discount on full drums.

Pat, when will the answers appear??

Yes, I'm guessing that it has alot to do with price too.

From what I understand, Shell Helix Ultra is on par with Mobil 1 and has been approved by Mercedes, hence them using it.

I just find it strange that they openly say "Mercedes & AMG recommend Mobil 1" and then don't put it in their cars!

As already mentioned - there's 'approved' and 'recommended'.

Mercedes-Benz and AMG being the manufacturer - and the UK dealers being just a retailer and service point.

I would imagine that at the dealership end of this - bearing how much oil they get through - if Shell meets the approved specs and is cheaper to buy they'll probably use that.

They're a business after all - all about profit at the end of the day :thumb:

Could well do that, but would be interested to hear the opinions!

Questions are being checked and sent to Mobil today, so should have them back in a week :thumb:

A very long week - just a day short of a month.

Any progress?

Hi

Did we ever get the answers to this Pat?

Regards
