still not bought a merc yet, would be interested to know what members would prefer, i want a car with plenty of comfort and gizmos, plenty of power, and plenty of space, (for 4 people on european trips) i have not had a merc before, and have been thinking cl500, e55, what are the other options, and which is the top of the range, i,e cl, s class, e55 ? any thought for a total newbie, oh i have a budget up to 20k

i am super impressed with my e-class 320cdi for total comfort, reasonable economy, huge power, and more gizmos than i ever imagined - it will take me about 2 months to get to know them all. Therefore, an E55 would be spot on i guess?

Get an S class. S500, S600, S55, S63.......

Hello

The CL is a coupe S class (two doors) and athough big I wouldn't want to sit in the back for a road trip...

How many miles a year do you do?

Also remember athough you can buy some of these cars for 10K or less they were 50K 60K 70K plus cars new and so the parts / servicing will be pricey. Loads of gizmos are great when you have a warranty, not so great when things start playing up.

Have you driven any mercs? and are you use to Automatics as all the ones you mentioned will be auto. As for top of the range the S63 would be the current most expensive S class. The E63 the most exspensive E Class.

Your budget would buy all sorts of mercs in different engine sizes C55, E55, S class, CL and eveything in between. You realy need to try some and narrow it down a little...

Also in most real life driving the Mercedes 320CDi engine is very good, you can also have a Brabus or similar 'upgrade' which would give it more torque than the petrol cars yet sensible MPG.

Exactly why I said S class!
If you just want a big cruiser for long trips, get something comfy. The S class can have 3settings of suspension; not sure about the sport saloons (S55, E55 etc). What will the ride be like in them compared to the non-sport S class and E class-sure someone will answer that soon.

Best advice i can give IMHO is buy a car for around 75% of your budget and keep the rest for repairs. Like I said in your other thread, one suspension strut is ~£900 parts only! Electrical problems are pretty common and costly.

Other things like ipod interfaces are costly, as are bluetooth adaptors or cradles.

GET ONE WITH NO PROBLEMS!!!! That is SO important. It might not seem like much at the time, but believe me, it will piss you off at how much it will cost to repair. e.g. My phone has never worked-thinking it was just a new phone needed, I bought one off ebay, but its something much more than that, and it will be £££ to fix)

Try visiting a few dealers, and test drive a few cars. That may help you.

I'm def selling mine in the next few weeks-time to get a newer one:rock:
Hope this helps:cool:
