Thanks malcolm.which is best engine oil? 0w/40 fully syth 5w/30 or 10/w40 semi-syth.acording to s.h last oil change at charlie browns(oh dear!) mobil 10w/40 semi-syth & a unipart filter

Oil is not my line, but it must conform to 229.1 or 229.3 Mobil 1 5/40 though MB are now using Shell since the price increase

Someone else will answer better

I use Motul 8100 xcess 5/40 fully synth from Opie oils, cracking oil and reasonable price. You would notice the difference immediatly from run of the mill oils.

we use shell helix ultra fully synthetic , merc spec 229.5 ,and it also extends the mileage between services:) also you can use 7g gearbox oil in the 5 speed box , the advantage is that it is more temp stable and does not break down under heavy loads i.e pulling a caravan or driving like its nicked

your box has 5 foward gears and two reverse gears (high and low)which depends which mode the box is in :)

The standard ATF for a 722.6 box is A001 989 21 03 10 which is synthetic.

What viscosity is that? The reason why I ask is that most extended mileage oils are thinner viscosity to allow for thickening.

Personally I'd rather have the added protection of a heavier weight oil.

The flexible metal part and handle can be anything you like. Just as long as its long enough to reach the bottom of the gearbox sump.

Someone once suggested curtain rail for the stick, which is a neat idea.

Try another dealer? There is no reason for them not to supply one (apart from them forcing people to take their cars to them for the work)

For G/Box : 722.696 here are the P/Ns. orderable from MB or Inchcape on line. Aug 2007 prices. Probably increased by now.

ATF Filler Cap P/N: 1402700091 @ £1.06.

Red Cap Pin P/N: 1409910055 @ £0.34

Dipstick P/N: 140589152100 @ £22 something,..... can't remember..

MB Spec ATF Oil P/N: A001989210310 @ £9 per litre.

this oil is for the engine not the gearbox

If challenged I do not think that MB would come off to well in the restriction of practices act if this was challenged in court

Fax through the dipstick part number to another parts department as a purchase order.I've never had any difficulty getting tools through either Merc or BMW.
