My brother has an audio ten with a broken cd stuck inside  , any idea how the unit itself can be removed from the car? can't see any obvious key slots anywhere

What car and model year?

The Audio 10 is held in place by 2 screws located behind the centre console panel. In order to access these 2 securing screws you have to remove this panel. To remove the panel you have to remove both centre vents, the centre console switch panel, the vent control panel, the ashtray and the gearshift surround panel. It sounds more difficult than it is in practise. Some help here: http://www.buellwinkle.com/Comand/COMAND install and removal WIS.pdf (For Comand read Audio 10)

Good luck.

Saw Alfie take mine out to replace with Comand -- I would ask him

stan, you are indeed the man with that pdf link.

still can't believe MB designed this to be such a mission!!!

You mean you have always wanted to get rid of your head unit and have just been waiting for a thief to remove it but it has been too complicated/time consuming for all thieves?

In that car I could have that head unit out in about 5 minutes - hardly a mission. More of practice. Like a mis-spent youth and the paper round addage.

i would rather have the head unit made easier to remove, instead of a crack head theif butchering the dashboard trying to get it out along with the window that has probably also been smashed in the process too...but that's just me though!

It sounds more difficult than it really is. If you start by carefully removing the centre vents (10 mins) the rest of the removal is plain sailing. All you need is a flat blade screwdriver and a Torx 20 driver. 6 screws and 4 clips later your Audio 10 is in your lap. Good luck.

If you want further details send me a PM with your email address and I will send you some illustrations.
