when any phone is connected via Bluetooth, the music etc will play fine but when making or receiving calls there is no sound and the person I'm trying to talk to can't hear me and vice versa.

First step is to delete the pairing completely on both phone and Audio unit. Re-pair and try again. If still no joy get the audio unit firmware updated then try again. If it still persists, and you have an Android phone, sell it and get an iphone.
