Audio 20 pinouts in W211

Hi there

Does anyone have the pinouts for the Audio 20 stereo that is in my W211?

The reason for asking is that I wish to install a Nokia bluetooth carkit and have it mute and pass the sound through the stereo's speakers. Apparantly as this is the basic model of stereo I can do this. So, I just need to know which are the mute and sound input pins.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

I don't believe it is possible as the W211 has fibre optic wiring. All you'll be able to do is mute the stereo.

interesting...

This is quite a tricky one as some experts say I can and some say I can't... I've been told that as this is the basic stereo and I did not specify any upgrades or stereo options then it should not be fibre optic...

I guess I can only tell for sure once I get the stereo out...

Just bear in mind that the MUTE is prewired to a designated location and that you are reducing the value of your car by not installing the Mercedes UHI system.

Looks like connector 3 pin 5. Since there are 3 versions I wouldnt know for sure.

Wow...!

Thanks for the diagram... wasn't expecting this much detail but will print it out and have a closer look...

Regarding the UHI, I did not spec my car with any phone pre-wiring and the last time I enquired I was told it was going to cost about £2,500 - £3,000 to have anything done...

So, I picked up a Nokia CK-7W for £60... the cold hard economics dictate on this one I'm afraid...

Unless you know some one who can do an UHI install for a lot less than £3K...

Cheers

Yeah I think that when someone in an E-class asks for UHI phone the dealers go "KA-CHING" and rub their hands ...... what b*stards.

For £2500 I could fly over to the UK, have a week in the Netherlands and the evening before I fly back could install the parts.

That is how much money they are making.

Why dont you take the car over to MBENZNL and see what he can do ?

Any chance you could post that diagram again? I never saved or printed it off the first time round. Better still can you just tell me which pin I should connect the mute to on the Quadlock connector?

I've got it all working now, bar the mute.

Thanks.

We no longer publish copyright material. Sorry.

OK...

But would you know which pin I need to connect the mute cable to?

Thanks

There is only one power and data connector and according to my first comment it is pin 5. Which part of this is concealed ?

Pin 5 is clearly marked on the housing.

Sorry Miro, didn't see that...

I'm going to ask another dumb question though... which one is connector 3?

Thanks...

Lets go back 10 paces. There is only one data connector with power on it. This connector is called connector 3 on this connector there are several pins all of which are marked clearly on the housing. The pin marked 5 is the mute pin. Your chances of getting this wrong are about 1 in 1000 and roughly the same for getting it right.

W211 Aftermarket Audio

I have searched high and low on MB Forums in UK, Germany and USA. I bought a sept 2004 W211 3 weeks ago. Lovely car, but it came with the single CD audio 20. I already had a JVC KS-FX742 HU with DAB and 12 CD changer. So I wanted the Audio 20 out and the JVC in. I took it to Unicar in Leeds, who - initially - were unfazed. But they could only get it to work on centre speaker. After alot of toing and froing, I persuaded them to have another go. Guess what the quad-lock lead they used DID work, providing they changed the wires round from the "normal" fitment.

Result

I now have a multi-channel radio including DAB, Tape, 12 CD changer, Phone cradle for nokia with mute, all beautifully fitted for GBP225.00 (excluding cost of JVC kit).

Unicar Leeds and Jerry and Steve get my vote for persistence and a really neat job.

Thanks Guys.

hi Miro
You seem to be quite savvy about merc audio.PLs help if you can. i have a basic audio 20 on myw211 and wanna add a sub and amp in the trunk. can i tap into the audio gateway in the trunk for the line out/speaker out? do i even have a gateway given how basic my stereo is? ( no aux input even)

also wanna add a cdc . is this a basic one wire connection from the head unit? thanks

Praveen, no seperate AGW with the Audio-20, it has din type speaker outputs on it (in the big connector), so you'll have to tap into that at speaker level for a sub - no line level output

Go look at www.comandonline.co.uk for the CDC and the W211 retrofit kit, its easy to add, and the 6CD MP3 capable CDC ends up in the compartment below the head unit (that opens up behind the switches)

Its just a pair of fibres, and a power loom that you connect up to the nearby fusebox and a litlle bit of dismantling

I did not see enough info about the Audio 20 unit to say if there is an AGW or not. The point being that early W211 cars with Audio 20 CC did come with AGW while later on cars with Audio 20 CD were standalone. If it has a single CD drive, it would not have AGW (as far as I know).

Yes, I assumed Audio-20-CD as I decided the car was 2004 - not sure why I decided car was 2004 though - perhaps from the middle post that mentions a Audio-20-CD - sorry !

If you have the Audio-20-Casette or Audio-50-APS, the upgrade to COMAND is significantly simplified as you have the wiring loom in place for the AGW already. In the case of the Audio-50-APS its even better (i.e less expensive) because its almost certain to have the dual tuner audio-gateway you need for COMAND & TMC

Thanks Richard,
also do you know if i can use the standard cd changer unit that fits in the trunk/glovebox? does it have the same connectors? its a lot cheaper than the one that goes in the dash compartment.
