Thanks for any help and advice

This is my dilemma….I want to keep my 107 looking fairly stock, but need a better audio system.

I have upgraded the speakers with these
Alpine 4" (10cm) coaxial 2 way speakers from Halfords Price £34.99

Which fit fine behind the standard speaker grills in the dash.

I need a nice unit that plays MP3’s as well as normal CD’s and ideally can control my ipod/iphone.
This one has Parrot Bluetooth so it would be ideal for pairing my iphone.

The problem that I have is that most of the modern units are too ‘bling’ for the 107. I think however that this will look fine.

What do you think before I take the plunge? The cost is £225 fitted. Is there anything else that I should look at that would be nicer?

Thanks

anyone?

A Becker is the obvious choice. Great quality but understated and OEM to many Mercedes models over the years

You may need to look secondhand or find a supplier with stock as I think Becker have ceased production now for the car audio market - a shame.

Do any of the period Becker units allow additional power amps ?

These could be hidden away to feed discrete crossovers and discrete speakers to provide a really good option.

I have just fitted a Becker Grand Prix to my 500SL and it looks stunning. It plays Ipod if you have the Ipod kit and also MP3 and CD's. It was almost new, I got it on ebay with the ipod kit for about £170. As mentioned, Becker have stopped supplying so your only option is to find a used one. They seem to come up fairly regularly on ebay so worth looking regularly. I think it is the only modern unit that really looks and sounds the part.

Thanks....went for the Alpine in the end, very pleased with it.

I also got a set of those from Halfords for £24.99 - they fitted no problem and sound a lot better than the old ones.

A bit of a thread resurrection. The Alpines don't easily fit on the driver's side as they are too deep. I really had to wedge it in. Otherwise I would have had to cut metal behind the dash. They so much better than the previous ones though. I have an 89 500SL
I bought a set of these today, but they don't fit!

Did you have to to extensive dremeling?

Resurrecting thread MP3 Player for R107

Hi guys, I am brand new forum member. Am about to take of my dad's 1983 R107 and it is fitted with a standard Becker cassette player. Desperately want to bring that into 2015 without going to bling. Any advice on new players that fit without looking garish? Suggestions greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Well after deciding that the Alpine was to modern I now have a period Becker Grand Prix installed, my advice would be to leave it as is.....Welcome to the forum, stay around plenty of good advice on here....

Only available used thesedays and a bit too modern but a Becker 7990 (grandprix) or 7920 / 7950 (indianapolis) wouldn't look too out of place in an early '80s MB imo... all three models look identical and are single CD units with an aux in at the back for a CD multichanger or ipod etc, the 7990 has bluetooth hands free, the 7920 has built in navigation instead and the 7950 has both. Dunno about today but traditionally there's more choice and better prices from ze German bay

Dunno if they do much for '80s era headunits but Tadpole Radios gut old car radios and reconfigure them to control a modern headunit that can be hidden out of sight. Not the cheapest solution but a lot cheaper than say a Becker mexico 7948 (Cascade disguised to look like an old Mexico)

If you're handy with a soldering iron a budget way is to hide a modern 'face off' headunit somewhere and use a ribbon cable to connect the face to it which can then be tucked out of sight but kept within easy reach...
