I have a 350CLK 2006

The car comes with a standard sort of full pack GPS/Hi Fi System. Radio, CD changer in the glove box and a plug for my iphone

I want to upgrade the system to something a bit more impressive in sound.... any ideas on where/what I should look for and where?

Also, I have a MB bluetooth kit which used to work on my old iphone, but now having the iphone 4, nothing happens.... Is this my iphone or the kit or something else.

I really would prefer to put my iphone in a cradle and have it charge and connect to the hi fi directly. Again, any ideas.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Mark, you could look at replacing the ageing Mercedes system with a modern after market system from Pioneer, Kenwood or Alpine.

These will provide the latest, upgradeable mapping system along with bluetooth support for the latest phones. They can also be connected to teh existing steering wheel controls in your car and are expandable with options for rear headrest screens and reversing cameras. Sound quality will also be a step up from what you have. It should fit nicely into the space where the mercedes unit currently sits.

Some suggestions are:
Alpine

Kenwood Electronics UK Ltd. | All-in-one > DNX7260BT

I would recommend you visit a good, local ICE (In Car Entertainment) specialist who can advise you better.

Err, thanks for that...... let me get this right. You refer to my ageing system (2006) and suggesting that the whole thing can be replaced???. I can't imagine, but wanted to check. The car has a built in GPS/Hi-fi/phone etc stystem.... can it be replaced this way?

I can't say that the GPS (now updated) is as good as my Garmin, as it doesn't spot fixed speed camera's and it doesn't want to support my iphone 4......

OK, now I am curious........... Mark

Hi Mark,

It depends on what you want out of a system but yes, you can upgrade, by replacing teh double din Mercedes unit with a new unit from Pioneer, Kenwood, Alpine etc. (the Kenwood by teh way includes Garmin mapping software) which will show speed cameras, traffic congestion etc as well as play DVDs, connect to an iPod and even improve the sound quality :bannana:

Here is an example of one fitted

If you update the iphone to IOS 4.1 it will pair and download the contacts. This assumes you have a bluetooth cradle. If you have an iphone phone cradle then it will simply pair, clip in and work.

Hello again. Thanks for that. The picture (dash) looks familiar. And yes, I can do miss the Garmin add-on's which the MB GPS system definitely misses... BUT.... can I squeeze your knowledge an edge further? On the standard MB system, instructions for the GPS are also in the middle of the Speedo, which is brilliant!..... does the retro system do the same and link up with all the steering wheel gear? Seems like a highly integrated system to me....., what with fuel, cruise, and all the rest of the stuff on that multiple switching... ..(sorry, this really sounds DOuble Dutch), but I guess you know what I mean......... I would hate to f..k up the system by plugging in the wrong things. Computers are more tempramental than our Dutch lady workers. hahahah.

No one has mentioned anything about speakers!!!!!!!!!. As said, she is a 2006 Cabrolet with 3 speakers in the front doors only....... Ideas, boom box, decent tweeters?, make?

Thanks.....and yes, I think the 30 points system for us new boys is a bit tough. Sure 5 would be quite enough for you to sus us out?

I believe the modern Pioneer/Kenwood/Alpine systems can be interated (using the CAN-BUS system) into the car's existing stalk controls and dash displays.

Best thing to do is speak to your local in-car entertainment specialist
