Hi,

Wonder if any of you mechanical guys can help...

A colleague of mine has recently bought a C200d on 2006 plate which has developed a fault as follows:

When starting from cold, the auto gearbox will not engage. The engine revs but will not go into gear.

He has been told that this is due to lack of oil pressure and that the gearbox oil level is probably low. He has also been told that this oil is only available from an authorised MB dealer which sounds expensive!

Any feedback for me on a) the problem itself and b) where the fluid can be source from other than an MB dealer?

Many thanks!

You need to dip the box first to check the level. Either ask a friendly indie to to do it (2 minute job) or buy a dipstick on e-bay for 6 quid.

As for ATF. That is really a choice / warranty thing. If you car is under warranty then best use Mercedes fluid. If not buy a high quality ATF from any motor factors. Or tell them what car you have and they will look up what ATF is best.

Using the correct ATF (automatic transmission fluid) is essential in a Mercedes transmission. The wrong one can cause serious (read megabux) damage.

To measure the level the transmission must be hot, at working temperature, on a flat, level surface and in P or N with the engine running. Your car doesn't have a dipstick so you'll either have to buy one, or take it to a good indie. You have one of the best near you, Prestige Car Service in Horndean. Ollie will be able to measure the ATF level and correct it as required using the correct fliud.. He can also a full ATF change which, with a car at five years old, might be a good move.

It does sound like you have a low fluid level. It is a 5 min job to check the level.

Pretty much can only be low fluid if not engaging gear.
Bigger question, is why is it low. . .??
