Hi all
The autobox on my 2001 320CDI has just started almost like missing a gear when trying to change into 3rd. It is like if you miss a gear in a manual and overrev the engine. When I let go of the accelerator it will then engage. It did however miss completely near home and I had enough speed to let it roll for a while and all of a sudden it would engage again. I have got it booked in for a fluid change on Monday . Also does anybody know the running temp of a 320CDI? Mine sits at just over 80. Would that be correct?
Many thanks in advance
Martin

In my experience - a mis-behaving auto is caused by either not enough ATF, the ATF itself is in grim condition or the ATF is getting too hot.

I think the fact you are getting the fluid change should mean two of those are ruled out.

Not sure about running temperature of a 320CDI but my 55 runs around 80 or there abouts. I think given this is the middle mark - they should all be there...

320CDI gearbox problem, big help.

Hi all
Went to have fluid in gearbox changed this mornng. As the problem with selecting 3rd gear persisted, I asked to have the fault codes read. It came up with 4.
P2500 : The transmission has an impermissible transmission ratio.
P220A : The speed comparison of speed sensor 2 and 3 is implausable
P2502 : The gear is implaussible or the transmission is slipping
P2600 : The voltage supply of circuit 87 has undervoltage
P2602 : The voltage supply of the valves is faulty

The place I went to, whom are ex Landrover and Mercedes guys, did not change the fluid. They checked the fluid level which was correct, and advised me that they think there is a suspect sensor in transmission, and possible transmission wear, overhaul of gearbox advised.
The garage I bought it from has offered to buy the car back, and whilst the sensible part of me says that is the right thing to do, I love driving the car and has wanted one for a long time. It has got 203.000 miles on the clock, mostly motorway, it is a 2002 car, and otherwise in good nick. What would you guys advise me to do? The garage is currently trying to look for a replacement gearbox with a guarantee on, to do an exchange with my gearbox, and I will have to pay for labour to have it exchanged. I was hoping to get a couple of years driving out of the car, but maybe I should just cut my losses and insure and tax my 2.0ltr 190E again. What do you think guys?

I don't get why they would offer to buy the car back (which leaves you not out of pocket - I presume for the invoice amount?) or make you pay for labour.

Why don't they replace the gearbox FOC and leave you with the car?

Also, how much is the labour being charged just out of interest?

Having had the same car, as much as it pains you, I would retrospectively have snatched the garages hand off if they'd offered to buy my E320cdi back.

Any issue seems to either get worse despite treatment or create new problems. Apparently there are dome beautiful models out there, but ask yourself, if the transmission goes out on you, not so much could you afford to replace it, as that's a bit personal, but do you really want a 1 to 2 grand garage bill. It's the sort of car that through personal experience would make me err on the side of caution.

I may be seeming negative, but you asked for opinions. Hope all goes well and trouble free, OP.

The running temp of my E320cdi is about 2 needle's breadth above the 80, hope you get it sorted buddy.
