I wont waste my time asking my local dealer this question as they say COMAND cannot be retrofit to my car so its not even worth the effort trying! But... I came across this on good ole fleabay:

Is this a simple plug in and go mod or is there more involved?

I would be tempted to give it a go.

Not speaking from experience but the folks I know who have done this mod on the current SLK have reported that, baring the sun light sensor, (lack of), conection/s + the charcoal filter not being there, everything works as it should and looks a whole lot better than the standard A/C control panel.

I believe the panel for the SLK can be picked up for about £125 on e-bay as opposed to it being a £400+ option on new.

sunlight sensor? is this the one on the mirror used for automatic headlights? if so my car has it

cheers for that! My next question, anyone know where I can source one in my interior trim colour?

I have a feeling they're going to be like rocking horse do-do because mine is plain silver trim, it doesnt have the CNC look to it that the Avantgardes have, or is the fascia surround removeable?

I'm not sure if the two are the same thing. The one associated with the A/C senses sun angle/inclination as well as its intensity, from the front, so I dont know if the one in the rvm would be the same. Probabaly not because that one senses glare from behind.

I think you may find that the control and display parts will seperate from the black fascia somehow?, maybe?.

To be honest given the chance I want to strip all the silver shite off and replace it with carbon panels similar to those klemann do. I love the depth of carbon fibre trims (providing its real!) and its a bit softer on the eye in my cabin with everything else being black.

i enquiried with mbenznl about fitting the climatronic and they told me that there was no guarantee it would work. Some do, some dont and there is no way of knowing until you get one and try it. Ive got a feeling the surround can be removed so the main unit can be fitted regardless of the fascia, but i may be wrong.
