hey,
I got an auto rvm but the mirror always remains dark unless the ignition is switched off or the gear is in reverse.

Any ideas what the problem could be?

cheers.

Stupid question but do you drive with your lights on all the time?

As it un-dims when reverse is selected it would suggest the rvm is working just getting erroneous signals.
Could be the sensor that detects light falling on the mirror has failed? If the forward facing sensor has gone down the rvm thinks it's night and the light falling on the rear facing sensor would trigger the dim.
Either way it would mean a replacement rvm

Well i am bout to open up the overhead lights as there also seems to be a problem with the illuminated vanity visors also. Anything I can test while im at it?

Hi,
Just for your information, the rear view mirror will not work when reverse is selected, or the interior lights are on, it may only work with the exterior lights on as well.
To be honest there is,nt really a lot that can go wrong, apart from the overhead light console.
I thought mine was,nt working right when I fitted it, but I gave up went out that night and it worked as it should.

i think its the forward facing sensor thats gone, looks like will need to get another one...... would a W210 one fit?

If you have a pre-facelift then your options are more limited but if it's a facelift then facelift 202, all 208 and 1997+ 210 mirrors will work. If you want to be more "factory" then it's always black for a 202 but 208 and 210 mirrors were also made in colours to match the interior.

lovely thanks. its a facelift and am looking at a lt grey one 1997-2001 W210 model, so this should work fine right?

That one should fit fine.

Is it a dirty sensor ?

no, i cleaned the sensor and indeed there was loads of dirt of it, but still didnt make any difference.
