Hi,

A Class W168 2003 Petrol Manual A210 has starting problems.

The battery is fully charged
I have disconnected the battery overnight and it solved nothing.

Put the key in, all seems normal, but when you do the final turn of the key to start the car it does nothing. No clicks, nothing. It does not attempt to turn the engine.

It has happened before after for 3 days it disappeared and the car worked fine for a month. Now the problem has returned.

Last time we sent the car to TM Motors in West Moseley. Of course by the time the car was towed there it worked. The garage said it couldn't find a thing wrong with it.

I am now after an Auto Electrician, preferably who is mobile, who can come out and look at it.

Any recommendations?

Thanks

By the sounds of it the starter motor has failed.

Speak to Richard at Twickenham Auto Electrics , really knows his stuff and isn't afraid to actually dismantle and fix , rather than just swapping parts.

Done work on my CLK , my dads ML and my wife's A class. He's mobile and fully equipped.

90% certain that the starter motor is the problem mate :thumb:

Very common on that model and a pain to change :(

It could be the starter motor which would be £££££'s to fix. But it could well be something cheaper, like ignition switch (Koolvin had this) or this: http://www.mbclub.co.uk/forums/electronics/97182-class-starting-problems.html where it was something completely different.

I'd rather look for other options than go for the nuclear option immediately.

Howard that's excellent - thank you - hopefully I can call him tomorrow and get him round on Tuesday.

Thanks
R

Howard - Thanks. Has he got a website?

He doesn't , no.

I'm just looking at his card he left with me , he's got an email address [email protected] but I'd give him a buzz as he's out and about in the van all day.

Thanks guys.

Hi Flanaia, The place we took it to the last time this happened are a recommended Indie and as the fault didn't replicate they said they couldn't do anything.

I'm going to try the Auto Electrician route this time round. Thanks Howard for the contact

Hope you are both well.

Take it to a MB specialist, they will know within minutes if it's the starter motor, why pay an auto electrician to diagnose for £100. it's quite an expensive job 3hrs plus motor, around £500,It is a common fault.

Usually star will tell you if it's the starter!!!

Dealt with Richard before ? where did the £100 come from ?

NO I haven't ,trying to save Op wasting his money, call out and at least 1hr labour £100,unless bloke is a charity, even if he charged £20 OP would still be £20 worse off:rolleyes:

I think you might be underestimating Auto Electrician's...but far more importantly missing that I already took it to a Mercedes Specialist who said they could not find any fault - they have a STAR machine.

Also guess what this morning it started up fine! I'm not going to call anyone out unless it's not working.

I think auto electricians are good for older cars and bespoke vehicle installations, sure they can give you a diagnosis which in your case I would be really surprised if it wasn't starter motor and or solenoid,in which case you would need a mechanic to fit it.I could recommend two or three indies on the south coast that would properly diagnose your car and fix it,and I am sure some members on here could recommend one close to you,but seeing as your problem is intermittent you can only get it fixed when the fault is evident,a pain.

kind regards
martyz
