Just thought i would let you all know, that I went to my local Merc Dealer near Gatwick to buy a Auto box Dipstick, I was told they could not sell one to me as they are not allowed to sell tools.
I went to my local Friends Garage, he said they would not even sell one to him, he purchased one throught a friend at a merc dealer.
I was taken back a little, by this. So I took the dimensons and will vist my local scrap yard to find a long dip stick and i will mark it up as per the merc tool 'dip stick'
Just thought you would all be intrested in there response.

I have heard this a few times. My dealer lets me buy antything.

Be aware that it's not as straightforward as it may seem. There are shaped shoulders on the factory dipstick which engage with a stop on the tube in the gearbox and which stops it from going the whole way in.

The diamond shape on the left catches on a restriction at the foot of the dipstick tube. Whatever it is can't be seen but for sure if the dipstick is entered into the tube with the sump off it will not go all the way through.
If you made a dipstick with anything other than this critical measurement you run the risk of having the wrong oil level
Entering the part number w140589152100 (measuring stick) into the Inchcape website comes up with the price £33.38 which suggests that it might be avalable from them mail order.
