W210 e320, feels as though it isn't creeping forwards (or back in reverse). Could this be due to the oil being thick with the cold weather or do I have a problem?

Neither, what revs is the engine doing?

Just idle (1k revs). Normally as you let go of the brake the car would move in the direction relevant to whether it's in D or R. The road surface is flat too.

Parking brake binding on?

Well this turned out to be my bad... I was cleaning my car earlier and I must have kncoed the switch next to the gear stick from s to w causing the car to pull off using 2nd gear and thus not being able to creep forwards.

I'll test mine. I'm sure it creeps, as intended, in either of the two settings.

Sounds more like a low ATF level. The pilot bushes can leak.

Years ago the standard was to be able to hold the vehicle on a 1 in 3 hill feet off the pedals.

Surely not on the torque convertor at idle. Wasn't there a roll back mechanism in the gearbox to hold it on a hill.

Not sure about that, but my Merc will crawl slowly back when a caravan is attached, on the same hill as when it will normally hold with no problem, so suspect no gearbox lock as such. A very slight press of the accelerator holds it no problem, so must be torque convertor?

1 in 3 is pretty steep, not many (MB) parking brakes would hold on that.

OP

I don't imagine W/S switch would affect creep in reverse.

It should creep even in C (2nd gear setting off), albeit not as eagerly.

Your gearbox/torque converter oil must need changing. Mine reverses itself out of my drive which is an upward slope even in C mode, especially when cold, when the oil is thicker.

It does.

If you want a more controlled reverse say up a gravelly incline...then use W.

My CLS55 would creep forward in S, even with the Parking brake set on but wouldn't move forward unbraked in C on my flat gravel drive. Similar in reverse gear.
My 203 would creep in S but not against the Parking brake, otherwise the same as the CLS.
BTW both Parking brakes would hold well on a slope...

My previous E55K in C sometimes didn't creep on full lock steering or even on gentle inclines less than 1 in 3 and the gearbox was in perfect working order.

Mine has a greater "creep" when in W. Very little in S.
