I went to my local Mercedes specialist, and asked about getting the gearbox filter and oil changed, and the mechanic started telling me it's a sealed for life box, I explained that I know but I had many recommendations that having it opened up and the filter and oil changed prolongs the life of the box, he said his view is if the box isn't playing up then don't touch it. As I had the feeling he didn't want to change it I decided to email a local Mercedes dealership for a price, now the service person I am dealing with has emailed back saying she has no price or details for a filter or oil change for my car and asked is my car automatic, which is a silly question as they never did a manual ML320. I'm confused I thought that any Mercedes garage or specialist would know how to do this. Any advice?

Very strange them not knowning much about it & not wanting to take on the job. I do agree that if something isn't broke you shouldn't fix it but Transmission Oil has quite a tough life & will eventually need changing every 100,000m or so (please don't quote me).
Me personally, I'd get on my back & have a go myself that or use a local generic garage, unless of course this interferes with your Warranty

You are not too far away from forum member Olly at PCS and from what I have heard and read he is the man to do the job.

Hello, i have only heard good things about Olly at PCS, i am going to be taking my 2001 SLK320 for an Auto Transmission fluid change very soon !! Regards Damian. :)

Sounds good where is Olly, I live North West London, I'm happy to use him if it's not to far to travel :) Does anybody have an idea how nuch it would cost? The guy at the specialist said the oil is about £80 on it's own, but that's not much help as he doesn't want to do it anyway.

Hordean, portsmouth. Just round the 25 and down the A3 for you.

Hey,,, I went to Olly (from Hertfordshire - A1m J6) for the same reason....he's one of the good guys. There aren't many left. For me it was worth a 200 mile round trip.

Thanks for the details will look into it, just will need to find the time to do the trip. I agree it's worth doing the extra miles to get a good job done :)

Another :thumb: for Olly. I'm another who makes the 140 mile round trip from SW London and have seen the difference in colour and viscosity between 95,000 mile old ATF and the new stuff

As I've posted before, the cynic in me says that "Sealed for Life" really means "We reckon we can put an expensive ATF change outside the fleet manager's 3-year total cost of ownership"

Olly is definitely the man to see, he changed the gearbox oil on my w203 at 70k. I was amazed how much smother the gear changes had become. And a lot less money than main dealer. :thumb:

I know this is an old thread, but is Olly still going, also how much does or did he charge ?

I believe he charges around £185 for an ATF and filter change.

Thank you.. I'll phone him Monday

Good plan. I had an excellent quote from him for my 722.5 gearbox but I was forced to use a specialist in Worthing who was almost £100 more. BUT, the result was way beyond expectation so no regrets.

Yes, PCS is an excellent choice and after the journey the oil should be hot and at its thinnest when it's drained out - surely a good thing.

I drive down from near colchester to have work done on my cars... 400 mile round trip... but Olly/ Jack/ Graham at PCS are the only guys i trust with my mercs. really nice guys who know their stuff, can't do enough to help and their work's always spot on.

Currently £180 for a 5 speed and £185 for a 7speed.
