Hi I am not having much luck with this merc when I start it it will allow me to put it in reverse and work or neutral and that is fine it will even go into drive no problem but when I drive it it is not changing gear so stuck in I assume 1st gear I can not change gear using the tiptronic option it just stays in D what are the possible faults please
Oh and the s and w button will not work ether

Does it give you a jolt going into drive or reverse? Potentially electrics pack in the gearbox, you will need to be the fault codes read and also the oil level in the box checked.

It's as my profile a 2002 c270 avengarde cdi with tiptronic auto. I am dreading bad news only had it a few weeks and love it

Yes it does jolt a bit normally it was very Smooth

Electrics pack is that a big job/expensive? How do I check gearbox oil level please

You do need to have the car diagnosed using Star (MB diagnostics) preferably at an indy.

Is Stowmarket ,Suffolk a long way for you? Alex Crow is a well recommended indy who could sort this for you.

As post # 3, the fault you describe could be low fluid level (hopefully) or the electroplate needs replacing . That is around £450 all in parts & labour.

Electro plate change is approx £300-£400 incl. new atf and filter.

You'll need a transmission dip stick to check the level. Best to get to a good indie and get the codes read at the same time as a level check.

I had the same troubles a few days ago...
read my last posts...
my solution was cheaper than I was afraid, but not everyone gets that lucky... please ser Alex... he helped me before and he is usualy right!
get your codes read... if you have a P0705, it is your PRND module dying, if you have other codes you may have to look inside your transmission... it can be as said before the conductor plate where the solenoids seat...
best option is always get to Alex... see what he has to tell you...
cheers!

As stated expect around £450, you won't get it done much less than that if using genuine Mercedes electrics pack.

As others have said likely to be electro speed plate failing. Likely to get stuck in 2nd gear.Do get codes read before doing anything.

Cost with an independent should be no more than £400 inc vat. My guy charges £65 for reading codes which is FOC if you go ahead with repair.

I had the same issue where the car would not go above 2nd gear, usually its a fail safe built in to avoid damaging the gearbox. As mentioned the worst case scenario will be gearbox problem, the second which is cheaper would be a service to the ATF and new electroplate which is what all the symptoms pointed to on mine but after having it plugged in on Star the good people of PCS Horndean advised me the battery had failed and after fitting a new one it worked a charm. In cold weather the battery can drain.

Get it checked on Star, this save me a £500+ job on my car that was not even needed.

I have an S320cdi W220
