Auto Tailgate Not Working E250 S212 Estate 2010

I installed a replacement pair of correct aftermarket gas struts on the off chance they were the cause of the tailgate problem.
At present I have to open it manually and close it manually. Like a manual boot hatch. But I want the auto. It is such a great feature.
As it stands the interior switch and fob and open and close switches on the tailgate all work.
When I pull the interior switch the latch opens and I hear the motor running as if the tailgate was opening but is doesn't open unassisted. Having opened the tailgate manually to the top and if I I push the interior switch I hear the motor running but again the tailgate doesn't budge. When I press open on the key fob the lock unlatches but nothing more. When I pull the open switch on the tailgate it unlatches but no movement up. Then I open it manually and press the close button on the tailgate and it bongs twice as it should but no movement down.
So the switches work but there is no movement. I will get it into my indie as soon as possible.
Any suggestions welcome.
Thank you for looking,
D.

No disrespect to your Indy but it sounds like a routine motor issue.

Wouldn’t your local auto electrician or body shop be just as good?

Sounds like the linkage on the motor in the roof lining has become disconnected. When the tailgate is fully open and you operate the button to close does the linkage arm which is visible at the top move.

Having performed the wiggly tailgate motor arm test I believe I have detected the problem. Any advice welcome thanks.

I know how the complete headliner comes out and it requires working from the front of the car to the rear. I won't be doing that. Nor do I intend to let anyone else do the work.

I wonder if working from the rear of the car, enough space may be created to access the tailgate motor (situated as per the attached photo)?
I presume this job is frequently performed in garages. I wonder how they manage it?
Has anyone had the pleasure?
Thank you,
D.
