There are pics and articles on the new S and M in this weeks autocar, some of the pics are computor generated and some are flimsy disguised. its getting closer to when we will get MB pics.
I was reading about the new E280CDI yesterday seems a good all rounder.

Having a subject header with S & M in it may attract entirely the wrong audience :D

Well now, very positive in most respects except that out of about 104 ccm's (column centimetres) of copy around 38ccm are devoted to a "fundamental flaw" which Mel Nichols reckons is a bad seating position: " Trips of about 100 miles were about as much as I could tolerate".

This is said to be caused by offset steering wheels and pedals caused by a too -wide transmission tunnel, and stated to be shared by 6 out of 8 Autocar staff writers and a couple of readers.

My own view is that this is a hugely overstated "problem" to bulk out an article which otherwise would not say much more than what we know already: Yes, there have been some electronics problems with some of the early 211 E class vehicle and some had some very bad experiences indeed, but otherwise it is a very fine vehicle indeed.

I have driven some very long distances in my S211 and my wife also uses it for long trips. We are both 6ft tall, I am not a small person and either of us have experienced any trouble whatsoever. My wife read the article and much like me said "What is he going on about??"

What indeed? We have a fair population of W211/S211 drivers here and perhaps someone could set up a poll?

""What indeed"" My wife is only a midget, but she describes this vehicle as the most comfortable ever. (we do however have all the seating options)

She abandoned me one week-end and drove up to Lincolnshire Friday evening, and returned Sunday afteroon, a round trip in excess of 540 miles. 265 miles non stop then a few miles of visiting relatives. N o complaints of discomfort or a numb 'thumb'

The poll idea is worth considering and I will start one on a site specialising in the 211.

Well done for suggesting the idea,
John

pm on the way

I have just been reading about the new M-class and its power units:

To make sure performance matches the looks, a range of four engines - three of them new - will appear. The line-up will kick off with the ML280 CDI, featuring a 190bhp diesel, while a new 224bhp V6 oil-burner debuts in the ML320 CDI. Petrol power is provided by the ML350's new
272bhp V6 and the flagship ML500's V8.

I thought all along the new V6 diesel would be the ideal partner for this vehicle.

Hi Mr E,
pm on the way, so far twelve owners have voted, ten with seats that have options. All state their seats ar comfortable

Two have standard seats are have voted there seats are comfortable.

I have obtained the permission of 'Satch' and just posted this part of his interesting message...

*****around 38ccm are devoted to a "fundamental flaw" which Mel Nichols reckons is a bad seating position: " Trips of about 100 miles were about as much as I could tolerate".

I have then asked

'Are your seats comfortable, or uncomfortable?'

This is divided between Standard seats and seats with options

Regards,
John

So far 37 owners of the 211 have replied and three agree their seats are uncomfortable and the remainder are all happy.

I accept that when someone is asked to find fault with their pride and joy they might have some difficulty in confessing, but the results are all that I can show.

Regards,
John
