In recent months i have regularly applied the autoglym super resin polish following a good clean. In order to add a bit more protection to the paintwork in the winter weather i purchased the extra gloss protection. I am still not clear on the following points as the instructions are not as clear as they might be:
1. Is it best to apply the extra gloss on top of the polish? would seem rather wasteful and potential for removing most of the polish you buffed in with additonal application of extra gloss
2. Does the gloss wax protect the paintwork more effectively than the polish? This is basically what i am looking for, and i was suprised how little of the gloss wax you need to use, and how the wax is basically liquid, i was expecting something more glue like!!

Since applying both polish and extra gloss (car looked new!) i have noticed how much dirtier it has been with similar mileage and road conditions/weather, i am sure this stuff attracts the dirt.

If there are better products available in terms of paintwork protection from salt on road and general wear and tear i would appreciate advice

thanks in advance

Ive always used autoglym on my cars and understood the polish gets the grime off and leaves a nice clean surface, then applied the gloss for that extra shiny finish.I would say that applying the gloss protection will protect the paint work better than just polish.Never really noticed if it gets dirtier any quicker, but the shine lasts a lot longer on the car than if I had not applied the gloss protection.

Zymol do a wax for around £40 that is specially designed for extra protection against road salt/grit - you only need to hD clanese your car at least every 6months and just apply the wax after. Zymol is not cheap but well worth it!

You apply the Extra Gloss Protection ontop of the polish, use very little and allow to dry for as long as possible before buffing, overnight, a week or more the better it works and lasts. Not always possible to leave it for more than a few hours though.

AutoGlym have just introduced Supreme Polisih, especially for dark colours, it is superb!

Autoglym

I have used Autoglym for years, the key thing to remember it is a cleaner polish. Effectively it cleans the paintwork, has some mild polishing ability and then seals the paintwork. So unless your car paint is in really good condition the AG super resin cleans it first and then the gloss protection cures onto this nice clean paintwork. As with all products like this you need to allow time for it to cure.

I generally apply the Super Resin and once this is all cleaned off apply the Gloss Protection. Apply this really really thinnly with a sponge. You only need a few drops just enough to create a really thin film. If you put it on thickly it is really hard to get off. (See the perfect shine thread for Glojo's little incident, with Gloss Protection :D http://mbclub.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=11481 ) Then leave it on the paintwork as long as possible. 1 hour minimum but if you can leave it for 6 hours this is much better. The Gloss Protection has very little cleaning ability.

Once you have rubbed it off, I generally do an other coat but leave for 24 hours first, the stuff must have time to cure. If you can't do it in 24hours when you wash the car the following week, with AG body work shampoo dry it well and apply an other coat.

One thing that is really worth doing is using the Autoglym Body Work Shampoo on the the finish. This is compatable with the gloss protection and results in water just sheeting off.

I did my car in early September with the Auto Glym stuff and I did not touch it until December, it did not really need doing but I just love a quick polish :D Autoglym is is a great product and does protect the paintwork very well for a long period. The finish is also very good but you can improve on this with some other waxes.

With regard to attracting dirt, I find that Autoglym is better than most if used with the AG BodyWork shampoo. so I am not sure about this.

You should see my car today, I just did 40 miles up the M1 and my nice "Perfect Shine" black car is nearly white. I do wonder if the local authorities are getting a bit liberal with the salt this year ;)

To be quite honest, I don't think their is much to compete with Autoglym in terms of protection. Klasse (Carlack) products produce a better finish and perhaps protect much better from light swirl marks but unless you want to get obsessive about paint finish like me, Autoglym is a great all rounder. The key thing is to make sure that water continues to bead on the paint surface and get any bird muck off the car asap. Also in the winter wash your car as regularly as you can.

I hope this helps.

Round here the problem has gone from road salt being chucked about to a salt solution being sprayed on to the road surface.

Cheaper and no stone chips but the price is loads of salt spray which is very messy and if left long term a corrosion problem. So now the hose is set up all the time in winter to rinse the salt off body and undersides as frequently as is possible.

Think I will have to Waxoyl.

I paid £250 +VAT worth it as they waxoyl under the wheel trims and cills at front and back that are trouble spots on R107

I personally used the following for the past 3 years on my IS200.

Klasse All in one (branded Carlack in the UK)
Klasse Sealent Glaze (branded Carlack in the UK)
P21s wax (its been renamed recently i think)

Apply them in that order. The Klass AIO strips away any crap on the car and provides a sold base layer. Then apply 2 coats of the sealent glaze and then a couple of coats of wax.

It will protect the car and leave an amazing shine everytime you wash the car for a good 6months. ( i usually do the process twice a year)

Chris.
I have also used the same Klass products recently,on the advice of another forum member & the results were very good. I clayed the car first, then used a swirl remover, then the two Klass products & finnished with two coats of Collinite 476.These were all applied with a Porter Cable machine.I was also amaised at how little amount of the products are needed.I realise now that previously I have been putting polishes & waxes on in too thick a layer. The PC will apply a very thin layer.I cant say yet how long the Collinite will last but the results are impressive.

As already mentioned the super Resin is more of a cleaner polish, the etra gloss being more of a sealant. I have used these 2 as well as the klasse products with excellent results. IMO the trick with the extra gloss as well as the klasse is to put on a very light/thin layer.

I tend to use them when I don't have that much time, otherwise my trick is to use sonus products.

1- Sonus SFX-2 for swirl removing (SFX-1 if swirling is severe and on bonnet after filling it pits (paint removed by highway driving)).
2- If I still have minor swirl marks I them go with a passing of 3M-Ultrafina SE which has fillers to fill in remaining swirl marks.
3- Sonus SFX-3 final car over polish
4- 2 coats of swissol (now swissvax) concorso wax.

Steps 1-3 with porter cable and various Sonus/3M sponges.

Amazing results but takes all of a saturday to do...

Think of Autoglym Extra Gloss Protection as a sealant. You apply it with very little pressure: you just spread it fairly thinly. As others have said, the longer you leave it before buffing, the more effective it is. If you have the patience to apply multiple coats, so much the better. It's as easy to buff off as it is to apply.

This contrasts with the Super Resin Polish, which is very slightly abrasive and needs more effort to apply. The Ultra Deep Shine polish is said to be for dark colours, on which it does work well, but I have seen it said that it is simply the better polish and works a treat on light colours too. (I can't find "Supreme Polish" on their website.)

My regime of monthly cleaning is Extra Gloss Protection every month and polish every three months. I checked this out with Autoglym and, as they advised, it works just fine. It doesn't attract the dirt.
