With test trials of fully automated vehicles ongoing at selected locations in the UK a programme on the radio today posed some interesting questions. In the event of an accident between two automated vehicles who is to blame? The vehicle manufacturer or the driver/owner/occupier. It was pointed out that these vehicles would have an immense amount of data stored on board which would help decide that, but then it was pointed out that there may be an issue as to who owns the right to access that data - the owner or the car manufacturer? This may seem "pie in the sky" stuff but it was pointed out that such systems already exist-- what about Active Parktronic if system failure or dare I suggest it--- a software glitch ---caused a collision or worse still- injured a pedestrian. Now there is an escape clause for the manufacturer at present in that so far control of brakes and accelerator remain with the driver, but what about DISTRONIC PLUS Adaptive Cruise Control?
