2002 c270cdi
Hi all,

I have recently bought a 2002 c270cdi automatic which ran fine and is in really good condition. There now appears to be an issue selecting gears. Once into drive the car will go no issue and move up and down gears but will with no warning stick in a certain gear. Even when using the triptronic it will eventually stick in either 1,2,3 or 4. It will not let me put the gear into park unless I turn off the ignition, and the panel on the dash also sticks on whatever gear the car was in. When I turn the ignition off, it will let me select park. Now, it has also started not showing a gear at all on the dash but will let me select D,R & N but not go back into park from here.

Has anyone any ideas before I bite the bullet and go into a dealer? I hadn’t really noticed if it had done it before but I had to pull into the hard shoulder today as driving onto the motorway the car wouldn’t change out of 2nd gear.

First post on this forum too so apologies if it’s in the wrong place.

Thank you

Hi and welcome. Sorry to hear you are having problems. I would recommend you take your car to an independent MB specialist as the main dealers are not that cost effective for older cars. Hopefully someone will be able to recommend a garage near to you, I’m on the South Coast so can’t help I’m afraid.

Welcome aboard, you're not the only one on here whose first post was about a broken car :)

It could be a few things, including the gear selector module, the control plate, the brake light switch (it does more than just turn on the brake lights) or low/dirty/past its sell by date fluid.

As suggested by AndrewOl, take it to an independent MB specialist and have the fault codes read. That will determine your course of action. Hopefully someone will be able to suggest one near you.

As a general rule of thumb, having fault codes read is the best way to start fault finding on a Mercedes. It can save a lot of time and money in the long run.

Unlikely to be sorted with a fluid change. Find an independent with STAR for a diagnosis.

Thanks all - I forgot to add to the original post that the rear reversing light flickers when selecting R, the right one works fine, but the left is flickering, bringing up a warning light on the dash.

Welcome aboard, you need a indy near you,at the moment all the scottish guys still seem to be in bed, hopefully they will recommend a local one to you,it is well worth paying the diagnostic fee, without Star it will be very difficult to trace the problem, you don't say if you have a decent service history with the car,has it had a gearbox service, but get a star on it before you do anything else.

Welcome . OP , don't worry too much your car is fitted with a robust transmission that (with correct servicing) can last longer than the car . As said , see if you can find any transmission service history then get the codes read.

It could be as simple as a transmission service required with possibly a new TCU plug fitted (cheap part) or a conductor plate to be replaced , again not ruinously expensive. But before spending anything get the codes read, preferably with a STAR reader. Let us know how you get on 👍

Thanks everyone, I’ll see if I can find a MB shop near and get them to read the codes

Try to find a mechanic with STAR, MB's own (and very expensive) diagnostic system. It can do far more than most if not all multi make code readers.
