Autotrader Beta website

I think it's cleaner than before, but I was expecting some design language used in the TV ads. They should be much closer in their styles for consistent brand message.

The biggest problem with autotrader is that you cannot sort by advert age.

Until they fix this irritation its a complete PITA to use.

There is a reason for that..... it's a subscription service for Motor Traders called traderlink. You won't see it on the public website anytime soon.

You can't select private and/or trader ads on the Beta version, unless I missed it.

not bad, AT is still better than exchange and mart....E&M dont even have a keyword search any more!

Maybe so, but the reason is ill conceived.

I get emails from autotrader telling me that today there are 5 new cars matching my search criteria... only they dont feel the need to tell me which ones they damn well are.

So this means I have to search through all 500 cars... again and again and again.

After a few days of doing that you get tired and instead start turning to car and classic, pistonheads and ebay that allow you to filter out adverts that you've seen already.

This cannot possibly be any good for the advertiser.

Why have they stuck with their bizarre age groups of 1,3,5,7,10?
I'd much rather enter the exact age myself.

Also, it would be nice to be able to enter a minimum mileage.

They could learn something from looking at the Ebay website.

Adver age is definately something that no trader or seller would want on there.. New searchers will instantly be put off by a car thats been for sale for months where in reality there may be nothing wrong with it.

The exact reason a buyer wants it is the exact reason a seller doesnt and the seller pays the fees so its not going to be changed.

I pay auto trader over £1500 every month.. if they put advert age in I would be kicking some behinds.

I've no problem with advert age not being on there as you are quite correct in what you say above, If a buyer can see a car has been for sale a long time it possibly gives them more negotiating power on price which the dealer wants to negate.

I have had an interesting time the last month or so trying to find SWMBO another car since we sold her Puma and I need to get her out of my CLK which she is using at the moment.

What really P*isses me off about Auto Trader is people that advertise on there who put a price of say £299 then state in the text real price is £2995 just to get to the top of the listings, equally annoying are the companies advertising from £75 again just to get to the top of the listing and I am well and truly fed up of calling garages who tell me sorry that car was sold 3 weeks ago! Then why the hell don't you take it off your website then and stop people wasting money on phone calls. The way I have been treat by some dealers over the last few weeks makes me wonder how some of them stay in business. I went to one in West Yorkshire to view a E320 Estate he wanted a big deposit before I could even test drive it (Despite me having full proof I was fully insured to do so) his final retort was well thats the way I work if you dont like it then F... Off. Which is exactly what I did.

I have just about given up on Auto Trader and after all this time think it maybe worth a visit to the auctions instead to see what I can pick up there.

By the way Jay thats some money you pay Auto Trader but I guess you must think its worth it and adds value to your business.

Yep its extortionate as ebay costs me a tenth of the price but they bring in 80% of my custom so they have me by the short and curlies.

i wonder if they have sorted the issue of brand new cars for £1 appearing at the top of the list all the time, which are obviously just adverts for properly priced vehicles.

Nope they are still all there, they should have taken this opportunity to clean up their act but appear not to have done so.

Also the irritation with mileage - you select adverts for cars with less than say 40,000, and get plagued with ads for cars with 60, 70, 90 etc miles, missing off the odd '000' at the end to get into a different selection. It only seems to be dealers who do that.

Autotrader used to have a 'report advert' link.
I used it a few times for misleading ads but I've not seen the 'report ad' link for quite a while now........maybe they were inundated!

Has anyone seen the portal for the iphone on the beta? Looks really good - It's a shame they don't port more functionality for symbian based devices.

A good feature would be for them to have an link-to button where users can link back to them for example on a forum without revealing their own home address.

I can see your point but there must be some middle ground somewhere so for those with a particular car search can view 'todays new listings' or something.

Providing this wouldnt reveal which cars have been standing on the forecourt a while but would allow you to spot new entries should you be looking regularly.
