Hello I recently bought a used Mercedes 220cdi Avantgarde diesel w203 2002
My friend told me that I made a mistake, because I only drive maybe 5000 miles per year. he said that this car doesn't like to stand round and then only used for short distances towndriving eg. Iam a pensioner second year though :-) and my days of long distance traveling are over.

He said the engine will suffer eg.

Did I make a mistake? Will it affect the engine negatively?

What do you think?

Many thanks

Peter

2002 MY should be fine as has no DPF filters to get clogged. No cars like short trips but the newer diesel cars circa 2008/09 are all fitted with many emissions gizmos that hate short trips. This might have what been what your friend was referring to.

As above, don't worry, got the same model and no problems with Mrs. 203 doing short trips.

Don't worry. My 2007 CLS320 CDI used to live in the coty for the most part. No dpf on it and it never gave me any problems. I realised I may have slightly f***ed up with my new purchase which is a 2011 E350 CDI with a pdf and all the bells and whistles lol

I have been a pensioner for 12 years now and still do a couple of 70 mile round trips each week and a 400 mile motorway trip monthly: not quite as quickly as I used to but still enough to take care of the dpf! So don't give up the longer drives just yet.
