C class estate s205 220d
Hi all, new here :)
Im just wondering what is average fuel range other c class estate s205 members receive.
I have a c class estate 205 220d 4 matic 2018.

I car has a 41l fuel tank unfortunately and i only recieve just under 300miles per tank with 30mpg on average. ( i do short trips and city driving which is result of poor mpg.)

Im disappointed i dont receive minimum 400miles range. Considering its a diesel. At the same time ive been decieved by auto trader who claimed its a 66l tank on tech specs when i bought last year.

Thanks!

While the 66L fuel tank is defined as the 'large volume' option, I've never seen a car that didn't have it, and so the small 41L is a surprise.

Regarding your car, the official fuel consumption figure is 50mpg and you should have seen 450 miles range - on a combined cycle. This means a mixture of urban and motorway driving.

City driving isn't ideal for a Diesel car, and short journeys where the engine doesn't get warm are even worse. Additionally, a clogged DPF (as result of short journeys) won't help fuel consumption either.

If you still think that the car should perform better, the things to look for are faulty thermostat, underinflated tyres, blocked air filters, and sensor or EGR faults that can be diagnosed with MB STAR.

I've also recently bought s205 220d. When i went to fill up for the first time I thought the fuel pump must have been faulty as it wouldn't let me put in more than 36L.

After further research, i came to know of the very frustrating 41l tank a small number of cars received.

My economy is also poor, like yours. I live in Milton Keynes so lots of stop start and short journeys. I currently have 1 bar of fuel remaining and have covered 275 miles. Not impressed, even with most driving being city driving. My old e220d coupe was more economical.

In comparison, my wife's 330d struggles to register less than 30mpg no matter how i drive it!

Mine is 66 litres, on a European trip I can get at least 700 miles between filling up. Never knew you could get them with 41 litre tanks|

Ikr!! I was hoping there was something wrong with my car. Because less than 300miles on avg is so bad. Im going to get rid of it for that single reason. Otherwise lovely car

Why?....there are these places called fuel stations where you can fill your tank back up.... they are everywhere... even more common that EV charge points! Who has to regularly drove over 300 miles without stopping even once!?.....,my bladder...(and sometimes my back to be honest) don't often allow it! How often do YOU really do that? And I thought only EV owners got range anxiety!......
......says the man with an 85L tank that showed over 700 miles range the other day when I filled it up!

I don't get it. You're getting low (30) mpg because you're using it for short trips so it never warms up. But if they're short trips, you're probably not doing that many miles ?

How often are you refuelling? Every ten days?

Even if switch to a 40mpg petrol car, it's not going to make that much of a difference in terms of visits to the Rachel Reeves donation station, nor if you pay good money to switch to the same car but with 50% bigger fuel tank and drop your visits by a third.

On the other hand, if you've got a driveway, one of these will let you drive 300 miles every day of the week for no more than £15, with no fuelling stops at all.

My diesel c350 is pretty efficient on long runs but very very thirsty when cold and in town... if you use a diesel for short runs in town it is the worst type of car for that task. Much better with a small petrol engine/hybrid/EV (if you can charge at home)

As already suggested get your thermostat checked.
Hi, can you educate me please as to why? Lets say thermostat was broken, how would that make a difference?

I wonder if being a 4-matic doesn’t help either?

Agreed with the 41 litre tank though - wasn’t aware these came with such small tanks.

Possibly a hybrid would be a better choice for your usage (short trips/city driving) if you like the 205 estate?

Diesel engines are thermodynamically more efficient than petrol engines. Hence better mpg but also taking longer to reach full operating temperature.
If the thermostat is faulty the engine ecu will operate in the cold running mode and use more fuel.

It seems like you have chosen the wrong car for your needs.

We have a 2019 C300 petrol estate with the normal 66L tank. On a decent run that gives mid-40s mpg and a full tank range approaching 600 miles. Obviously less in stop/start local driving.

As already commented diesels take a while to warm up so aren't ideal for short trips. And there's likely some weight/transmission loss penalty with 4Matic.

The W205 launched with a 41 litre tank to reduce the weight and hence get better mpg and emissions ratings

My understanding was that for most markets including the UK the 66L tank quickly became the default.

I do have a ticking sound appearing under my car which i created a seperate thread for. Would this ticking sound be possibly linked to thermostat?

See short youtube clip pls.

He OM642 in my 212 warms up really fast...as fast as our petrol A Class and much faster than my old ALFA....the gauge reaches 90 and the heating gets hot a good couple of miles earlier even at this time of year.

On the impact of Fourmatic, I’ve owned 4WD and 2WD versions of the same 2 litre petrol 320i.

In leafy, leafy SW London and Surrey I got 10% better fuel economy from 2WD: 44mpg instead of 40. (Over a broad range of free flowing motoring)

Must more than I would expect....its still having to spin all the drive shafts...in 4wd or not. On my Ranger it's less than 1 mpg...and that's a really old school system.

But even in 2WD you are permanently carrying around extra weight compared to a 2WD version of the same vehicle, which affects the economy.
