Average speed cameras

It's not just on motorways that you have to be careful. I drive in & out of Nottingham every day & the average speed camera's are everywhere, but even this doesn't seem to slow everyone down.

The M62 and M1 in West Yorkshire has had long duration roadworks with average speed cameras, and like many other people it always seemed to me that there were drivers exceeding the maximum permitted speed with impunity.

Whilst talking to someone with knowledge of the works I was told that literally thousands of fixed penalties had been issued.

It occurred to me that as this system does not have the deterrent effect of seeing justice being done - a police vehicle at the roadside reporting an offender, it would be a useful exercise to have a sign at the start of the works showing the numbers of penalties issued each month.

It would maybe deter some offenders and be rewarding for those who conform to the limit.

Whereas if there are no changes, it will continue to be rewarding for the public coffers...

Which is exactly what the mobile VMSs were displaying on the A23 roadworks (Handcross).
They were showing number of offenders from the previous week, updated each and every week.

Guess what, no difference whatsoever with average 150 penalties issued on a weekly basis.

Set the speed control to the relevant speed limit, that's what it is there for. Simples.

In Finland we have nice system; the speeding ticket must be pointed to driver, not the owner of the speeding car. This means that driver must be recognized from the picture taken by speeding camera.

One of my main issues with drivers and speed cameras is why, when you are going the speed limit, is there always someone in front of you who decides to brake to 10 miles below the speed limit? It's quite a frustrating thing. Well, sometimes, on a good day it doesn't really faze me.

Hear hear to that.

Becausevthey dont know that the speed liminpt on a dual carriageway is 70 when there is a physical barrier separator. Be that grass or steel.

I think the old derestricted tyoe signs shoukd be replaced with less ambiguous 60 /70 signs.

Whats your opinion or experience?

They are spawning throughout the country.

We also seem to only have super long roadworks for 15, 20 or even 30 miles now.
