I'd forgotton how tasty they really were, there are so many dog eared ones around. That is a seriously nice motor - takes me back to my teens .

Love the 15 hole alloys

and they are a pig to clean...

Sexy beast! I thought about getting one before the Z, but fancied something newer, maybe next time:devil:

Very nice

Still like the EVO II's with the huge wing :) :)

Those dog leg gear box's must take some getting use to

black & silver plates, oooooooo i got told off for that every time i went out

they make the car look so much better

Looks like parts of the engine have been painted in the body colour. I had one exactly the same as that a few years ago. Incredible build quality, beautiful soft leather seats but I just hated driving the thing!

Why - was it hard to drive/ tiring?

I found it impossible to drive it smoothly in traffic due to driveline shunt. Some people say they all do that, some say it must have been just my car. The gearbox was a bit cumbersome too being a dogleg but what I didn't like most was the amount of body roll on turn-in along the lack of feedback from the steering. It never gave me any confidence in the handling so I never drove it that hard. It's a shame as I thought it was a beautiful car.

that is very very nice :)

dogleg boxes are easy to use and it puts 2nd and 3rd opposite each other which is ideal for performance driving.

Nice car - shame about the number plates - I think they look great on older cars, but on newer cars (and I include the 190 as a modern car) they just don't look right - plus you're asking to get stopped as being in breach of the regulations.

Lovely :)

Currently seriously considering buying one of these and tweaking it. Seems to be a bit of a pandora's box under the bonnet though!

Lovely car in lovely condition.

Thought I spotted some dirt on it, but it's actually my dirty monitor. Now considering detailing my PC.:D

A few points:

Getrag 'dog leg' gearbox is very well suited to this car. It's a very strong gearbox, and as has been said - straight throw from 2nd to 3rd is useful. Maybe not the smoothest of gearboxes, but that's not what it was designed for - it's supposed to be purposeful and strong for racing. There are always automatic versions available if you just want a smooth changing gearbox around town etc.

The suspension/steering etc work very well, one of the best driving Mercedes models I would say. Steering doesn't give you a lot of feedback, but that's because it's a power assisted recirculating ball set up I would say - no different to many newer MBs in that respect (W202 AMGs etc?)

Out of interest 74Merc, how old/how many miles were on your car? If it had fairly high mileage, it may have been a case of wear and tear etc - selector bushes, engine/gearbox mounts, propshaft couplings, backlash in the diff etc?

Mine had about 130K miles on it when I sold it. I often wondered if there was some wear on the transmission, but when I asked my mechanic he told me everything was fine. The previous owner was fastidious about maintenance (he was head of road safety in Northern Ireland) and I had a lot of bills for work including one from a main dealer of £8000 for a complete top end rebuild! I would have liked to get it sorted but I knew that it would never come close to the E30 M3 I had before it for driver satisfaction.

130K miles on a car that is often driven hard like a 190E 16v could well equate to a lot of wear unless parts have been replaced.

I've just replaced the engine mounts, prop couplings, SLS accumulators and both rear struts on my auto 2.5-16, that has about 130k on it also. The old mounts were shot, the prop couplings worn, the bushes in the struts worn and the accumulators were faulty.

My manual 2.5-16 which has full MBSH and under 100k drives a world apart from some of the higher mileage examples I have owned/driven. Much tighter and fresher, although I am still considering some more preventative maintence in the near future.

You really need to keep on top of things with cars like these, there's a lot of cars out there which are running well and soldiering on but are far from in fine fettle. I'd say that with 130K it'd either have had, or would benefit from many new steering/suspension/transmission parts :)

Out of curiosity, how much did the parts cost to do the overhaul? Have you done anything with the front anti-roll bar? A lot of people seem to replace it with a thicker one from a W124 Sportline to tighten up the front end.

I've lost count on some of the things I've spent on this car - top end overhaul, suspension, wheels, etc etc.

I think the accumulators are about £100ish each side from MB, or about half that for FEBI-Bilstein replacements. The SLS struts are expensive, over £300 each new from MB - maybe slightly cheaper from one of he 3rd party suppliers.

Engine mounts were about £60 each from memory, the prop couplings I think are similar - £40/60ish.

Labour is about £120-140 at MB per hour round here, probably half of that at most good marque specialists or free if you are handy with the spanners! :)

Front anti-roll bar is standard on my car. Some people fit different bars as you say (W124 sportline, 2.5-16 EVO I/II(?) ), but I'm happy with my car as standard TBH.

Will,

Money well spent - your car was a star at the recent GTG. When you get those little jobs sorted it'll be a minter! the quality of paintwork was superb overall - probably a testament to your polishing skills!
