OK so I've established my handy/mechanical skills are less than those of a dyslexic, short-sighted chimp with arthritic hands!!

I stupidly , somehow managed to wedge a set of keys somehow half in and half out of the back of the ashtray!!! (yeah, I know!)

Anyway after a bit of tinkering and dismantling of half the car, managed to remove the whoe ashtray unit.

However in my clumsy attempts of removing the swiveling tray bit (pushing the lugs in on either side) and wriggling it forward, but without successful removal, I have cocked up the spring mechanism that pushes the tray forward when you push in ashtay to release/open it!

I think I can see how the little sticky out bit of the spring needs to fit over and under some plastic lugs in the sides, but cannot manage to manoever it over/under accordingly. (is there a spring both sides as lighter side is completely sealed off and cannot see nuffin)

Anyone ever had to dismantle ashtray mechanism completely or know how to fix it???

AAAAARRRRRGGGHHHH!!!!!

(W202 model BTW)

Not quite sure what you've done, however I've only ever removed the ashtray in its entirety - not managed to break the spring mechanism !

If something has broken in there, it may be too much hassle to fix, and depending on whether you have the wood or carbon trim, it may be cheaper / easier to just get a replacement unit from the dealer.

Alternatively, somebody else may have some idea !

I managed to knock the little gear out of the ashtray once and it took me a couple of hours to fix! I had to wedge it with something and then force the ashtray shut, that snapped it back in again. The price of a new one was the main force driving me to repair it ;) Good luck!

I'm not sure if its the same on the C class, but on the 190 you can remove the whole ashtray assembly by undoing two screws at the top, where the ashtray opens.(if that makes sense!!) Basically, when you open the astray, you should be able to feel/see two screws just above the shut line.(if that makes any more sense!!!!!!)

The screws are at the bottom, behind the coin tray thing, may require the armrest removing (same screws).

Woo Hooo!

Done it!

Had to remove whole unit (as Shude has directed).

Spent ages messing around trying to wiggle spring over/under lugs....

in the end, popped the two holding , sprung, pins either side (which act as the pivot axle for the tray, and pulled it half out.....shuffled the tray then to the full open position and popped it back into its holding holes.

Seemed to act like a reset function and presto, spring action back in place! :D

As a side note.....what an impressive amount of engineering (ie spring release for swivel tray and inner tray, dampers and push in to release/lock ashtray) goes into just the simple ashtray component!!! :)

Well done! :)

It was the damper for the inner-tray release that I broke/repaired, as you say it is an impressive amount of engineering! :)
