Looking at getting the Mrs something a bit bigger than what she has now and she likes the B class. Unsure whether to get the B180 cdi or B200cdi 2012 onwards. My only worry is she only has a small commute and would be worried with any issues with the dpf due to her having a small commute. Don't really fancy the petrol as higher tax and poor mpg in Comparison to the diesel. Plus we would use this car more as the family car as mine is thirsty and this is a good size car with a lot of equipment should be relatively comfortable and excellent on fuel. Anyone any advice or any owners stories?

Thanks in advance.

About 5 years ago I tried switching from petrol to diesel as my W126 with 5litre V8 was a thirsty beast .

While the C270CDI , I got returned great fuel economy , I had all the well documented CDI woes with leaking injectors , failed thermostat , numerous other issues such that I spent north of 2 grand on repairs over the 18 months I kept it , then I heard the turbo had failed with the next owner and the car is off the road .

The running costs ended up being higher than those of my V8 , and I went back to petrol cars which I maintain myself and which tend to be trouble free .

I did hear what you said , but I’d be looking at petrol B Class , or C Class estate for use you describe, plenty of the latter around .

Left field choice , if mainly used for local journeys , and you still have your other car , would be to look at an electric vehicle, close to zero running costs , tax exempt , ULEZ exempt , lots of grants available, and with charge points growing all the time , many of them free at point of use , longer journeys OK with route planning . Worth a look .

Well given the short trips I would go for the petrol version of the B class,my friend has one and they are good little cars, always go for the manual box,the auto's are not good, there is a 2012 one on Ebay,at a well respected car dealer George Kingsley at Colchester for under 7 grand ,of course you being up north may well scupper that one,but there is a balck one at Bolton for a couple of hundred more, best of luck finding what you want.

In today's market ----petrol every time--if you can find one? [following Mercedes UK policy in past years of "you can have any powerplant you want- as long as its diesel ! "] ---- the autobox is an automated twin clutch manual setup- like the A class

Mine is a W246.208, a EURO 6 built in Feb 2015, with no need for AdBlue and only £20 VED. I do a mix of local and medium journeys and (other than a short period when the coolant thermostat did it's own thing due to a loose connection) it has been totally reliable over nearly 30k miles. I'd also recommend the DCT auto over the earlier CVT.

It seems to regen the DPF regularly and automatically, and does so without a problem or an effect on performance. The only indication that it is happening is the note of the exhaust changes to a sort of deep burble for 5 to 10 minutes before going back to normal at the end of the process. If you stop the engine part way through the process, if say you are on shopping run and park up, it will carry on again when you set off again; however, it appears to disable the stop/start system while the regen is in operation, changing the green 'A' to orange.

Fuel consumption is excellent, with high 50s/low 60s for local runs and even 70+ possible on long runs at motorway speeds. I've towed our caravan for nearly 10k and usually get about 32-35.

So, would I recommend one? Definitely - but if you wanted mine, you'd have to prise the keys out of my cold, dead hand.
