E280CDI Sport Est., CLK 200k Cab., VW T5 174, Citroen C8, and a 2CV!
My sis-in-law drives a B200CDI. There has been a screeching from a belt so my brother asked the local Merc dealer to tighten it up.

It's just as well the car is under warranty, because they say they need to take the engine out!! To tighten (or possibly replace) the water pump which has worked a bit loose!!

Has anyone else heard of this???

A prime candidate for buying an extended warranty when the standard one expires, methinks!

Audi TT style. where the water pump is buried between the front wheel arch and the side of the body.

No ... not heard of this particular issue, but not funny and doesn't surprise me ! Have driven mine 25000 hard miles now in 12 months, and not a hint of mechanical issues ... creaks and cracks which have been sorted out, but nothing major to speak of.

Think I've been lucky ! Time to change though, so hope not to find out !

The risk here is that after replacing the pump/belt she will experience secondary issues with the items they disturbed whilst removing/reinstalling the engine.

Another example of cost-cutting over serviceability: I recall some renaults needed to have the front bumper removed to have the headlight bulbs removed...even though continental law requires that drivers carry a spare set!

Same problem with the MK4 Golf. Its a bumper off job to replace the headlight bulbs....

Precisely!! :( There's an awful lot to go back under the bonnet with modern diesels.

This started years ago ... to change a fan belt on the (hideous) 70s/80s Talbot Alpine and Solara you had to take the front wheel off and remove an access panel in the wheel well.

But engine out to get at the water pump, and bumper off to change a bulb sound pretty horrendous.

Is that the new, old or both TTs?

Anyway modern cars are a nightmare of accessibility, front lights anyone.

Mike - with grazed knuckles and fingers apparently 8 inches too short.
