I have a Mercedes B200, 65 registration, petrol, auto, sport. Periodically I have a ‘transmission failure, take it to your workshop, do not change gear’ dashboard warning. The car's engine would, without any warning, just cut out and the car would drift to a halt, (this is not ‘limp or ‘fail-safe mode’ where the transmission is locked in 2nd gear), this happened a couple of times each year but is now getting more serious. Depending on where, and how lucky I am, it could prove fatal, a smart motorway for instance. The problem never shows up on their Mercedes plug-in diagnostic system.

Mercedes have had the car since the 18 February to rectify this fault. They kept telling me that they could not find anything wrong with it. But I persisted with my complaint and they, surprisingly, had to find out from head office what the display essentially means.

Finally, after further tests, under instructions, they found a fault, i.e. 'the battery had been producing too much voltage to the gearbox, this then causing the problems you have been experiencing'. As the wording is very ambiguous, I need to quantify their findings with other experienced viewpoints, it will help me decide on their result, and as to whether I should accept this car back.

Can you help me, please?

Funnily enough we have been having the same problem with our B180 auto.
The transmission fault indicated a temperature sensor inside the gearbox when read on my MB2 diagnostic.
Have only just got it back from MB so not had chance to see if it is fixed. They changed another electronic box inside the gearbox and had the cheek to charge me for the fluids and bits.
Perhaps you could get the codes read by a good independent MB specialist as not all MB places are that good, thorough or caring imho.

Thanks for info. When everything gets back to normal and MB reopens I'll let you know anything else.

They are difficult to diagnose but with some fault codes and previous knowledge they are not impossible. Most repairs are expensive though.

Our fault code on my MB 2 was a generic code, P0711 pointing to a transmission fluid temperature sensor, A circuit. The guy from Mobilo said the same but MB replaced a module inside the gearbox. Perhaps it contained this sensor ?.
The gear box oil , filter, gasket and bits cost £170 form MB.
