Can anyone recommend someone who could do a fairly specialist quote on our bathroom which is very tight for space and can only fit a 1500-1560mm length bath in it? We live down in Faversham, Kent and have looked at Dolphin and Reflections bathrooms but have no experience of this kind of thing so do not know if they are offering a good and/or reasonably priced service. Thanks, Adam

No, but I'll offer a piece of advice, if I may.

Couple of years ago, we had a small bathroom, with a small bath-space, a bit like yours.

Dolphin did absolutely no design work whatsoever. We asked for advice on a small bathroom, and he showed us pictures of tiles "That will make it look bigger". After three hours (during which time he had to measure the bathroom three times, because I kept pointing out he'd either measured or drawn it incorrectly) he quoted us:

£27,000. Yes; twenty seven thousand pounds! For a 8' x 10' bathroom!

In the end we paid around £6k (from somebody else). We put in a thing called a shower-bath, otherwise known as a 'd-bath' or a 'p-bath'. It's what it sounds like, and is round-ish at the shower end and bath-shaped otherwise. It's only 1500 long (you can get 1700 versions).

We used a long-established independent bathroom retailer, who put us onto a reliable fitter (slow, but good quality).

I actually designed the layout myself, using a nifty brochure from Homebase. In the back, it had a piece of graph paper, and cut-out shapes of all the furniture and fittings they sold. We didn't buy from Homebase, but the bits of card were very useful. Dunno if they still do brochures like that.

Get those, or some other brochures. Most of them have little plan-drawings of the products (wc, basin etc), or measurements at the least. Cut them out, or draw rough shapes onto Post-its (making sure you use the sticky edge), and you can then design your own layout.

You'll quickly see that with a very small bathroom, there really are very few alternative designs or fittings, so to pay for a design service can be a bit unnecessary.

Thanks mate, might speak to our plumber and see if he recommend an indie, according to my measurements the D/P-bath won't clear the side of the toilet pan so I think it is just the basic for us.

I don't know anyone that has a good word to say about Dolphin. They seem incapable of doing any form of design but are really good at delivering a heart attack when you see their price.

We got a local indi to do ours and he did a superb job for a really good price. Try and find a local indie and see if you can go and see some of his work. Our's now has several recommendations from us.

They can usually source good quality suites etc for prices better than you'll find on the internet too. We got our shower cubicle for £500 less than book price.
