I think I need a battery, it's very cold but it's so slow to start.
Is there a special procedure to avoid codes and retain settings please?

Thanks Ed

Charge it in situ .

^ No need, but you can if you like.
Without another power source the windows may need resetting after a battery change but that is easy enough
Just remember to disconnect the Negative terminal first and attach last when changing the battery.

^ No, the audio and phone settings should not be affected.
Only the windows and sunroof may need resetting.
Lower each window on the button, then raise to the top and hold the button on for around 5 seconds. Same for each window and sunroof if you have one.

Thank you, I killed a chrysler 300 by simply disconnecting the battery frying the WCM module which resulted in it being scrapped a couple of years ago, so I'm very cautious now!

Are there not two batteries in the W215, like there is in the W216 one for starting and one for everything else.

I don't think you can "fry" anything by changing a battery, that's just folklore.

I did fry the WCM on my Chrysler (Merc OM642) which wrote it off simply changing the battery, it was not common but has happened to quite a few so I do get anxious now.

I'm sorry but don't see how it can, did someone tell you this or did you take apart the "WCM"?

It is a well known issue, happened to quite a few (non USA models only affected), car refuses to recognise the keys after and locks the ECU and the WCM fails completely, replacing the WCM / Keys and programming is needed after. Dealer only fix which costs around £1500 if you can find an ex Chrysler dealer who still has the equipment and skill. It just leaves me more cautiuos now when changing a battery.

Just read up on it, is it the fact the WCM fails first, a well known problem on this vehicle, then the car refuses to start. Changing the battery doesn't help so it's assumed the battery change caused the fault ? I cannot see how changing a battery can damage electrical components as they are well protected from "surges and reverse polarity" unless these components are already damaged.
If you are still worried then connect a smaller battery to the battery posts while changing the starter battery.

To be safe do it like this.

I use a spare set of jump leads to link the car battery terminal connectors to another old battery sitting on the work bench, whilst very carefully then removing the old battery and replacing with the new. This maintains the electrical circuits and prevents me getting all sorts of warning messages and needing a STAR reset on my SL.

Do you have jump start points under the bonnet you can use ?

Sadl the CL500 doesn't have them oddly
