Just how do you charge the battery in a modern Mercedes? Can you still use a battery charger or is there a new fangled gadget available?

You can still use a 6 amp battery charger as normal, but the Ctek conditioner is becoming popular.
Lidl and Aldi often have a very similar charger on sale for around £14. I have one and its just as good as a Ctek.

The owners manual should say that you can use any battery charger that does not exceed 14.6 volts. To be safe that generally means a regulated or automatic type of charger. An old unregulated charger would be a bad idea unless you monitor the voltage and physically disconnect it before the charge voltage rises above 14.5 volts. But one time you'd forget.
