Battery drain - cause?

Thanks Ted. I have just such a voltmeter (and one on the dash courtesy of GM - full instrumentation in a truck!) but as the ciggy socket is permanently live I'd use it more as a tool on the truck and at that I'd be as well open the bonnet and use the Fluke. I did have it in the smart permanently though (as the socket only energised with ign on) and it was useful. Mine doesn't have the USB provision but I have another thingy for that.

Key to sorting all of this out though was the info on the (fuse blown!) Fluke. For that, your advice was invaluable - thanks.

I would guess that this is sorted now - I was thinking possibly alternator diodes and quickly scanning through all the replies I didnt spot that any one said that the easy way to test a problem in this area is to switch you DVMM to V AC range (or V DC\AC) if you have a good enough meter and then check to see if you have any AC reading across the battery (or ripple on AC\DC range) with the motor running. You shouldn't have any.
