Battery symbol & visit workshop

Am currently away with work commitments and having just spoken to SWMBO, she informs me the 55 has come up with a red battery symbol on the dash with the words visit workshop.
Have done a quick search, and I am lead to believe this is more than likely to be the aux battery or alternator.
So my question is, how do I know for sure which one is most likely to be the culprit?
If its the battery, can anyone recommend best place to buy or the type I need.
If its the alternator, the same suggestions pls.

The car is 2005 model with currently 87k on the clock.

You will need the fault codes read, there is a bcm unit that controls the split charging system and will store a code.

Mine did it the other week, its been sat for weeks on the drive.
drove it for about 10-15 minutes and it cleared and then i could get the roof down :bannana:

I purchased both of my batts from merc direct.

They gave me a great deal. Give your local mb dealer a call

Just a quick update, replaced the aux battery (located in engine compartment) at the cost of £70, purchased from the stealer. All is good!
