The 1980 Contach only ever got to 186 mph in Lambos Imagination!!!! Like lots of cars before it..(150 mph E Type S1 anyone???.....yeah right...more like 135!).in the real world they struggled to better 170. Still plenty fast for tyres and brakes of the day.
Ferrari were not much better....188 claimed....but due to their varying engine tolerances of the time 166 to 176 was the reality....again, quick enough.

The fat Lambo was and arguably still is 'that poster car'.

It transcends every other image of the 80s and indeed other cars

And it was probably crap in so many motoring ways.
But it was on most teenage boys walls in the world, blu tac'd up next to Debbie Harry posters.

I wonder what the comparable Aston looked like at the time.......

If the E type couldn't manage 150 , I'd then question the XK-150S .

Alas I couldn't try with the one i found abandoned ... the triple SU's gave it away as a 150 as the lesser ones only had twin SU's .2_IMG9011.jpg3_IMG9012.jpg4_IMG9013.jpg5_IMG9014.jpg6_IMG9015.jpg7_IMG9016.jpg8_IMG9017.jpg

Much more Savile Row than racetrack refugee. Aimed at a different market though.

Still aimed at people who wanted to be seen .

For a slightly different clientele , who didn't mind flying under the radar and not being recognised , there were the cars from Filton

Rumour has it that Bristol Cars are to be revived , yet again , in 2026 . We can only guess at what will be offered , but probably some of their more recent models ,

Or perhaps something completely different , this rumoured to be the new Buccaneer .

For me it's the boxer, a good friend of mine used to own one back in the early 80's. I remember back in 2011, he told to sell all my cars and buy one because they're about to go into the stratosphere. I didnt have the bottle to spend $100k at the time given the state of the economy. I should have.

Dreamt of owning a BB from a young age and finally saw one in the flesh last year at the parade before the London to Brighton car rally.

Back in the day though it would’ve been the Countach but someone here mentioned the De Tomaso so here’s one from last weekends Enfield Pageant of Motoring. IMG_5426.jpeg

To my eyes , it is a topless version of the 1950s 405 : the maroon car second of my photos above.
Not sure if it’s the angle but the side view doesn’t look quite right to me. The front quarterlight, the passenger window then the rear quarterlight all look the same size.

It is circa 1980 , and you have the choice of either of these cars - which camp are you in - are there any other contenders ?

I believe the 512 and the Countach each claimed a top speed of around 186 mph at the time .
The Berlinetta Boxer is possibly the best looking car they have ever made.

Going back to the original post, neither. Both ugly as sin.
Some older models are just beautiful (Mercedes SL Gullwing anybody?) but those two are just horrible.

I was amazed to discover my father was about to order a 512 as his company car in 1979, sadly he died young from a heart condition, I found the brochure and papers when clearing his desk. I'd opt for the 512.
