We've been playing around installing a Becker sat nav system and have come across something that's a bit strange

when we switch the unit off and turn off the ignition the unit continues to make a bit of noise. It sounds a bit like a CD motor still spinning or an internal cooling fan - do these units have one fitted?

Is this normal behaviour or is something not quite right?

If it's normal - how long before the unit switches itself off completely?

If it's not normal - any ideas on the fault?

The ISO connectors are all correct and have been triple checked by two people.

Cheers

Andy

Yep, mine does that. I *think* it starts up when you get in the car, too (as in, open the car door to get in).

cheers Rory - anybody else?

any ideas what it is?

gyroscope maybe?

and how long until it flattens the battery?

I hate mysteries

Andy

Mine continues to play music (disc or radio) after the ignition is turned off for approx 5 to 10 seconds.
It doesn't fire up until the ignition is turned on again though.

Another thing I hear is when I change disc the one that was playing can be heard faintly until the new disc is loaded.
I think that is something to do with the anti shock memory.

It is quite possible that the navigation disc is spinning after you turn the unit off though. There is an internal gyroscope but I cant imagine hearing it.

Thanks Ray,

Disk in or out the sound is the same - it's a very faint noise but definitely there.

I assumed it's a fan.

noise

fitted mine - easy as pie - took me longer to get the old stereo out - works a treat - mine also plays music for a few seconds then fades out and turns off - no strange noises - dead silent at all times - no fan noticable at any time . Is it a new item or second hand? may be a faulty item :(

btw have just wired up an mp3 player to the aux i/p - great and cheap way to add additional music. Bought a cd changer but doesnt work with my head unit - mine was out of a land rover - up for sale if anyone interested - silverstone 7860 i think

mine was also out of a Land Rover - well, out of Land Rover surplus stock now they don't fit them any more so it's brand new.

The sound is weird, it's definitely not the CD motor spinning as we can see the CD in the slot and it's not moving.

When I first switch off the unit it's silent but once the LED on the front panel starts flashing then this very quiet sound starts up which suggests it's something that is time related. Turning the LED flash function off or removing the front panel has no effect but pressing the CD eject button does stop it momentarily.

Maybe there's a fault on the unit, I'll talk to the supplier and see what they have to say. Everything else seems to be working perfectly though.

just been and checked mine - in the rain - definately no noise at all - suggest you take it up with the supplier .

hmmmm, this gets more and more interesting.

I've spoken to the supplier and a local guy who specialises in fitting ICE they both say the same.

The noise is nothing unusual but it's a high pitched sound which not everybody hears. These units have a "pulse" which they use to regularly check satellite data (they'll amend routes which you have stored in system memory if they are affected by road closures etc, update the time, constantly refresh their "visible" satellites and so forth)

It seems that some units are more noisy than others, some people can hear it, some people can't or just block out the sound.

We checked current drain and it's absolutely minimal - less than 10ma so flattened batteries shouldn't be a problem so it's reasonable to asssume that everything is working as it should be.

Cheers for the replies

Andy

Joking aside that sounds like a recipe for a long and happy marriage :)

perhaps I'm being fussy, years of sitting in recording studios tends to tune your ears to picking up "odd" sounds or perhaps the units which Rory and me have are unusually loud.

I said earlier I hate mysteries and this one is still on the "pending" list.

Thanks for all your input so far

Sorry, I might have mislead you - If yours is out of a LandRover then I doubt it's the same as mine, which is the Merc factory fit DVD COMAND (made by Becker).

Mine definitely makes a quiet, but noticeable if you listen for it, noise which I would say is a small fan. It continues for a couple of minutes or so after the ignition has been turned off.

have also used this board in the past - guy really does know his stuff - quick response too

Andy, the comand units have a fan. If you open the door of your car, you will hear it running. If you stop the engine and the comand unit is shut off, you will hear the fan for a minute or two (don't know exactly how long, but shouldn't be too long).

This is normal comand behaviour. Nothing to worry about.

greetingz,

BigSis

ah, but it's not a comand unit.

I spoke to my supplier who has agreed to replace the unit because I'm not 100% satisfied - can't say fairer than that and we'll see what the new one does when it arrives tomorrow

Andy

the replacement unit is totally silent so it was obviously a fault. all credit to the eBay seller though who really moved heaven and earth to make sure we were completely satisfied.

The model is a Becker 4765 it's installed and working perfectly.

Andy

Andy ok - mine is also a 47** i bought a cd changer for it - but not compatible as my model was out of a discovery and that uses a different cd changer, appears yours is similar so no point in trying to flog it to you either. have connected up an mp3 player to mine this is just as good as a cd player tho and works a treat.
