Hi.

Been offered a job in Belper, Derbyshire.

Don't know the area at all, but a nice looking job and we were looking for a move south.

Can anyone tell me anything about that neck of the woods?

Cheers.

Tim.

Belper is a small town with all the facilities you could need. Its quite hilly and lies between Derby and Matlock. Matlock bath is infamous for Bikers of all types who visit most weekends, a bit like going to the seaside. Ice creams and fish and chips etc....

I don't live there, but visit occasionally. Other places not far away are Bakewell and Chatsworth.

What do you need to know.

I think Silkolene Oils are based in Belper? and Denby Pottery is just down the road.

I'm not far away, if you need any info. I don't frequent the place, but I know a little about it. It's on the A6 and is right at the south end of the Peak District, so there is lots of traffic, but also a lot of tremendous scenery right on the doorstep.

I thought it was most famous for being the home of DEB - the hand cleanser company?!!

It's also one of the homes of George's Tradition, if you like excellent fish and chips.

Isn't Belper the home of Aristoc tights? Don't ask why I think that. Lovely place though.

hi folks.

Thanks for the info so far. Glad to hear the scenery is as nice as it looks on the map, we'll be leaving Scotland for it - so outdoor lifestyle is pretty important.

Things we want to know - is it a nice area? Not excessive crime, drugs antisocial behaviour etc.

is it the kind of area you'd want to bring up your children in?

Thanks for info so far - cheers.

Tim.

.

I had a tart from Bakewell once .

The town itself isn't bad - one of the nicer ones in the area. A guy I used to work with lived there and liked to refer to it as "the gateway to the Peak District" although he'd lived there all his life and was biased !

The Peak District lies to the West and is marvellous but a lot of the towns to the South and South-East (towards Derby and Nottingham) are run-down former coal mining places and aren't so great.

I would check out the top 50 comps in the country and try to live in the catchment area of the best near Belper.

Ashbourne, Bakewell, Matlock, all feature but there may be some even closer.

Thanks all. Some good info - looking positive.

Next step is a trip south to have a look round.

So that's another Peak District GTG coming up then? :)

Howard - you really know how to wind up the locals. Tart indeed. Pudding!!

A Bakewell Tart is easily recognised by its distinctive feature of having two legs.

I was just thinking the same. :)

Would it be the same place as last time, or would we give the hapless original venue our custom?

BTW, I've spotted a rare sight at the dog when passing several times over the last couple of weeks "Two for one meals this evening".
That would probably mean we'd have to go as a couple though. If I'm not your type you could always hook-up with Flanaia1, TrapperJohn, Ian Walker.... ;) :p

Belper, home to a very large German boiler manufacturer called Vaillant. They make Vaillant, Glowworm and Saunier Duval boilers and controls.

Town is nice, they have a large Morrisons etc... and is fifteen minutes from Duffield which is right next to Derbys ring road the A38. ten minutes the other way and your into Matlock and the peak district.

The town is kind of split. One side of town is all traditional cottages etc... narrow streets and cobble roads and such but just over the hill (near Vaillant) is a large new build estate with a school and shops.

It's very hilly but with some lovely views...

Isn't Belpter 'oop north'? ie beyond the Watford Gap and marked on the map as 'here be dragons'?

The surrounding area is great for the outdoor lifestyle with the peak district - rock climbing, walking, running- and Carsington water within easy reach. Hartington cheese shop is 30 mins away. My parents live in south Derbyshire and love it.
