Well…. what can I say…

The Bentley that I have been given to look after /borrow whilst its owner is away I had taken up to West Yorks over w/end to a wedding. Because I had a bit to drink on Saturday evening I let the g/f drive the Bentley back yesterday noon as a precaution in case the alcohol would still be present in my blood over the legal limit (even though I was fully sober).

Well… she curbed the near side front alloy wheel but to be fair it was a tight narrow road. I bit my tongue and did not yell or say anything to her about the wheel what so ever. I’m now going to replace the wheel with a brand new OEM wheel as it is only fair as I am not a fan of refurbs and am not planning on saying anything when I hand the car back but will get the tracking done again as well by a specialist just to make sure all is ok even though it was very minor impact at low speed and all appears to be fine.

Was a great w/end apart from the wheel curbing incident but apart from that she drove the car pretty well and I was well impressed wit her driving/confidence of car like this. :)

Tell him what happened.

He'll respect you for replacing it with a new one, and for owning up. If you say nothing and he finds out (mismatched serial numbers or something) then you'll look like a chump, and you won't get to drive it again. Or the Veyron he's going to buy next ;)

oops - I would want to know if I had a new wheel. Honesty best...

be interesting to see how much a new wheel is ...

keep the curbed one as a souvenir of your time with the car .. make it into a mini coffee table :)

Haha! Exactly what I had in my head whilst reading the first post.

Good luck....

I hear Nationwide are doing good offers on second mortgages at the moment .... ;)

I can imagine quite a few things!

def. tell your friend having had the job done (reasons as above) - and get it refurbed before making into a coffee table!

if not e-bay it, somebody will!

I suppose you guys are right about being honest and I will have to tell him what happened...

I know that it is going to be really expensive replacing the wheel and getting the tracking done just to safe but under the circumstances its only fair that I do do all of this.

Thanks for idea of making the old wheel into a coffee table...:)

Bentley dealer wants chassis details which I will have to read off the car this evening and then get the full price.

Good luck! Keep us posted, the coffe table idea sounds good, refurb the wheel turn it into a coffe table and you may even turn a profit :)

How long is your uncle away for? Have you got time to do this?

Can you part-ex the old one? ;)

Nope unfortunately... (he laughed at me parts guy when I did ask)

It will either be a coffee table job or possibly ebay as others have suggested.

I personally feel that telling the owner about you replacing the wheel is a catch 22 situation since, I personally feel, he may keep wondering if there was more damage to the car due to the wheel being curbed. If you do not tell him to keep him away from sleepless nights, as I would be, then the wheel would be in the file of the vehicle as per the chasiss number requirement for ordering this part, which may eventually surface at a dealership.
I salute you for your honesty in not having the wheel refurbished and put back on the vehicle.

Look, he's your friend, so you know him better than any of us. And also he must be a good friend and you to him for him to trust you in the first place. But personally I would have left the car as it is and told/shown him the damage in situ, so he could judge for himself the extent of it. Then give him the choice of either he himself getting it fixed with the offer of covering the cost, or, offer him the choice of you getting it done for him, saving him the hassle and then paying for it.

These things happen unfortunately, and I'm sure by lending you the car he accepts the posibility of something happening.

But it's a 'Bummer' anyway, and I hope that it's not too expensive.

Cheers, Bill.

After Sales Service for Bentley Stealership “Jack Berkley” is appalling. Reception could not be bothered to transfer me over to Parts Dept and told myself to call on their direct dial and she knew that they close at 17.00 and no one would take my call.

Anyway, the wheel I’m after is the 19” 9 spoke 2 piece. I will have to wait until morning for the price now when they open again.

Below is a pic of the wheel:

I will replace the wheel and have the tracking done and will tell him upon hand over of the vehicle as you have all said is the right thing to do. I doubt that there is any other damage done apart from the wheel and possibly the tracking slightly disturbed. When the wheel got curbed she was negotiating passing a on coming car at approx 10MPH and had to move towards the kerb to avoid the other car from clipping our wing mirror/bodywork. Wheel alignment specialist said he will give the car a once over and he too very much doubts that anything else has been damaged.

Dear Flash
I really feel for you, and, hope it all gets resolved. Make sure your GF is there at the parts counter when you write the cheque! Personally, I would keep your GF out of the explanation as you weren't allowed to let her drive it - were you? Say you did it and pay for whatever necessary. This way, only you f****d up, whereas the full story would suggest a much more substantial misplacement of trust. Now some, might consider this a little underhand, but the name of the game is damage limitation and only you know the owner and how he might react.
Good Luck

I did think this as I read through the thread.

Were you BOTH given permission to drive?
