In today's Good News Department, Alexander Dennis Limited, one of the world’s leading independent global bus manufacturers, announced that Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe has exercised options for 198 Enviro500 double deck buses, to be delivered to the German capital by the end of 2022. The buses will be built in its factories in the United Kingdom.

They supplied two buses in October 2020, and following evaluation the customer has now converted options on another 198 into confirmed orders. The customer has further options on another 230 of the buses in the contract.

Great news, so now only running an engineering deficit of 200000 to one

Having spent my entire career working for a UK Precision Engineering company, ultimately running their Engineering R&D team, I'm acutely aware of the deficiencies of UK plc's industrial strategy thank you.

But ADL's contract win is still Good News.

Could send them to Germany running on coal to keep in custom with the German emissions target :)

When we send them over we could fill the fuel tanks up with Covid vaccine , they would appreciate the thought ;), good news . We can build stuff over here , we have always been able to , just needs the political will to get on with it.

Shouldn’t this be in the Politics/Brexit thread?

It's pretty busy over there.

I'm surprised they were allowed. Have they been paid yet?

Lignite would probably be more appropriate ;) 🤣

That is the biggest part of the problem. Political party after political party in the UK have been trying to turn us into some kind of Singapore financial service island for so long now that they have lost sight of what we are really good at.

The Enviro500 apparently comes with Cummins or Mercedes Benz diesel engines. I wonder which one will be fitted to the Berlin buses?

Only if people turn it into a political topic instead of the celebration of an automotive success story for the UK.
The very next post!

It’s great news. There was quite a bit of ill feeling with Dennis in Guildford when they closed the chassis factory last year citing COVID, then outsourced to Turkey. But good if these buses will be built in the UK.

Err...we're actually extremely good at the financial services stuff. Massive contributor the country's finances.

But, yes, other sectors have been ignored.

Industrial policy over the decades seems more or less to have been prioritised by industries that public schoolboys want to work in.

Banking and....err banks.

That just about sums it up, and it becomes a vicious circle because those controlling the investment pipe have a poor understanding of manufacturing industry’s needs. Hey ho.

Cummins is American , so my money is on the MB engines being fitted.

Maybe they should go for the Mercedes engines that are designed and made a bit north of Northampton .....
