Hi all, just bought a black E400d convertible and wondering if anyone has good advice of a good shampoo to give it a wash every couple of weeks, can you use the same shampoo on the roof as well? Looking in Halfords for car cleaning products and now with all this snow foam ect has left me with a headache with what to get, just want a cleaner that will leave a nice shine without water marks and not to much hard work to apply (if possible) if anyone has any advice I would appreciate it, thanks

Welcome Stuart and congrats on your new car. You've asked a question that if you asked it a million times, you'd get a million different answers!! However, if you're restricting your search to Halfords and we're only talking shampoo, then you will find the Autoglym product as good as any

I used it for years before moving on to Gtechniq. Top tip for a black car: always use the " 2 bucket method" if you're hand washing. It helps keep the swirl marks down. And if you fancy giving the car a treat once in a while, invest in some Black Hole

Hi Mikey, what is meant by the 2 bucket method? I’ve never heard of that phrase, also I’ve never heard of black hole but I’ll certainly look into it thanks

At a guess 🤔 your not into keeping your previous cars pristine. Lots of videos around. All the best with the new car:thumb:

Welcome - and don't forget before and after pics :ttiuwp

You have really opened a can of worms now! These detailing guys go into great detail (see what I did there?) Stand by for a discussion on the best Q-tip to use and should it be used clockwise or counter clockwise?

Just teasing - they are a very knowledgeable and helpful bunch ;);)

Do they do the poor boys in halfords?

I don't think so Sarah... and looking on line, it seems that most of the detailing specialists are awaiting stock at the moment.
Typical! The moment I recommend a product, it's not available. Just call me Jonah :D

I purchased all of my Poor Boys stuff from amazon, they do have the 'Natty's black Paste' but do seem to be out of stock for the Black Hole ....... It is good stuff!

Another vote from this black car owner for Poorboy's Black Hole.

I'll probably be kicked out for what I'm about to say: I used to abide by the 2 bucket method, but no longer bother. I still use two buckets, but not in the usual manner. Both buckets have shampoo (whatever wash/wax seems the best offer at the time I buy it), with one solely for the wheels which I clean first (using WheelWoolies), then the other for the bodywork. I use a wash mit for the bodywork, wringing it out onto my drive between each dunk. I never let the mit go anywhere near the bottom of the bucket, where any nasties gather.

No hard and fast rules about how to wash a car, just do what you find best to my mind, having said that though, it might be an idea to have one of these in the bucket even if only with the one used to wash the bodywork, I use it and dirt cheap to buy ... oh yes pun intended ;)

I can't see the point in those when I never let my wash mits get lower than half way into the bucket.

Fair enough, you know what you like. I find then useful to jiggle the mitt against to encourage any drop out of the particles a bit like the old way of doing washing with a wash board, but as I said previously, everyone has their ow way of doing things.

Hello there Stuart and welcome to the forum, great to see you join us although I confess to being very much a newbie myself.

Just out of interest and if you should be thinking of going down the road of Poorboy's Blackhole Stuart, this is not a finishing product, once used you will need to protect the surface going over it with something else like and an easy product to use is e.g. Auto Finesse Finale Detail Spray or one of the oh so many others available to choose from.

Unlike in the video however, I protect my black bits using this and I wouldn't be using the AF on the front windscreen:

If I come back from a drive and have got caught in the rain and splash-back has occurred where one of my gals has got a bit mucky, I can't put the cover on as any gritty particles on the paintwork could cause scratches, so I give her a quick and light going over with the following, but if she is too dirty, then she stays uncovered and will need a proper going over:

Life would be pretty dull if we all liked the same thing, that's for sure.

I got pretty good results with Black Hole followed by Bilt Hamber Double Speed Wax.
