Dear ALL,

Am thinking of fitting a tuning box to my B200 CDI.

Have looked at a few and most claim to up bhp from current 150 to around the 190 mark along with a jump from 300 to 390 in torque

Which is the best fitment to undertake bothin terms of ease of fit/use & costs?

Regards

Pete

Quick view:

(both need the insurance company told or you risk financial ruin through uninsured 3rd party claim - loss assessor can find both quite easily)

Remap: tailored to the car, semi-permanent, CAN be found by the manufacturer but not the dealer (and WILL void warranty if found). Best performance and control of parameters. May be overwritten by software update. Needs a dealer who will do it again if the car is updated AND will remove it when you sell the car. Watch out for "motorsport" remaps which are too dirty for the road.

Box: digital ones can be tailored to the car, can be found by dealer, police and everyone else!, WILL void warranty if found. If they fail, fault code and "check engine" light will be set and need dealer or Star to reset. Good performance but potential for over-fuelling which is especially bad for the DPF cars.

Fitting either to a leased car could result in a damages claim against you (as its not yours to modify! - read the small print in the lease).

Does your car has automatic transmission? You should try to verify that the CVT in the B can take such high powers. Brabus has some fine tuning kit for the B-class but it doesn't say specifically that they can be used with automatic transmissions as well.

Got 07 C320cdi fitted a brabus plug in unit, now 272bhp 590nm torque. Still does 35 to 40 around town and 48.8 on motorway between 70 and 80 mph - fantastic performance. The plug-in units are easier to fit yourself, and if you sell the car, you can remove it and the engine will return to its original settings. After doing a lot of research, I found there are many different makes on the market, but went with the Brabus, although it was the most expensive, because you still retain the Mercedes warranty on your vehicle. If you use a different make, your warranty will become void. Beware of cheap units as I have heard of them damaging people's engines due to poor mapping.

Is the warranty completely unaffected? I thought I read that a mileage limit (60k?) was applied if you fitted a Brabus box. Might be wrong about that though.

Dealer told me the same 60,000 mile limit on warranty too.

CAUTION

The tuning boxes can have some unforeseen problems. I had one on my c270 cdi. was great fun, but had the following problems as a result

1) Wouldn't start - Cracked fuel pump housing
2) Intermittant starting - pressure sensor
3) Wouldn't start when left for a couple of hours - leaking high pressure lines
4) Sudden loss of power - the front cat fell apart blocking the second cat, result new exhaust from manifold to rear box

Although all of these where fixed under warranty/service contract

If you don't have either could be very exspensive.

I have ordered a B180 CDI with autotronic transmission. The Brabus tuning set is said to provide an improvement of 0-60 mph number from 11,3 seconds to 9,99 seconds. This is for the manual transmission. Do anyone have any idea what numbers I can get with the autotronic transmission given that the original B180 is 0,5 seconds slower with auto compared to manual transmission.

Also do anyone know what physical differences there are between the B180 and B200. The engine block is obviously the same but is turbo, clutch, gear settings etc.... different in any way. Something has to be different as the engine tuning set to Brabus for the B180 doesn't give the same performance as the original B200. Also the B200 CDI with autotronic is only 0,1 seconds slower than the manual. The B180 with autotronic is strikingly 0,5 seconds slower than the manual transmission.
