Best Fuel For Mercs

What do you guys normally fill up on...?

I've only ever filled my C180k up on V-Power / Super Unleaded (97Ron)

I went to buy some chickens from tesco yesterday and decided to give theit 99Octane fuel a go...

It doesn't seem to be as good as V-Power... But then again it was wet today...
 
I only use V-Power (99 RON) in my Merc.

I have never tried chickens, but I will give them a go.:)
 
Well it just has to be Diesel.....or Bio..
 
LOL I try not to put diesel in my SL.

I may be able to put V-Power in my Vito though ... there is a diesel version now I think.
 
I have never been sure of any benefit of V power in the 129 or 230 it also depends where you live as too the cost,down here it is 10p more

I used to run my old standard vanguard on 50% paraffin during the Suez crisis, it used to pink alot, but that was probably because It was pink parraffin

You can get 99 Octane fuel from a chicken? How on earth do you manage that;)
 
I used to only fill up with V-Power or Optimax, but I have been using Tescos 99Octane lately. Power seems slightly better for me.

Does anyone know if we need/can re-program the ECU to get the most out of these higher Octane Fuels??

I would have said yes, all cars leave the factory set at an average for all countries, some as low as 92 octane.

Once it was done you could not safely use 95 anymore

I think thats mainly what these lads with a laptop do for £200....
 
I've got to admit that after using ordinary unleaded for a while and then changing to either V-Max or BP Ultimate, (depending on availability), I noticed a definate improvement in all departments. Its well under a quid round my parts now so the pain of purchase is not an issue but the improvements would have outweighed it anyway.

So, its V-Max or Ultimate for me.

I definitely get more torque from my VW on V-Power (clearly noticeable when towing the caravan) and more range from a tank (noticeable on the long motorway run to the South of Germany and back). So I'm happy to assume I get the same benefits in my Merc, although being 'adequately' powered in the first place any improvement in that respect isn't noticeable on the road ... you'd need to put it on a dyno (as 5th Gear? did when testing 'premium' fuels). So it's about the additives package and the increased range, for me.
 
It shouldn't be necessary to adjust the timing for higher octane fuel. The ECu uses a knock sensor to advance the timing as agerssively as possible until the onset of knock is detected.

These things work within a given band, if you alter the timing surely you just shift the whole band up a bit, once done the bottom of the range is to high for 95
 
For the last 6 fill-ups I have used Tesco 99. Prior to that I used their standard unleaded. It is about 5p/litre more for the 99.

Here are the results since February when my journey patterns changed:

95 : 28.4 mpg (685.96 litres over 4292.6 miles)
99 : 28.1 mpg (292.15 litres over 1807.4 miles)

These results are not exactly fair though as I started using 99 after Ian Walker repaired my car's misfiring problem and I also fitted a sprintbooster practically the same day ;)

Thank you Shude , does not this bring up the old problem, that if your car is made to go a little quicker, you drive it faster and loose any possible gain

I'm not sure I understand you here television. The map contains the whole spectrum of timing and fuel settings.
The timing is advanced as far as the knock sensor detecting the onset of knock, thus is at the peak setting, which is variable and dynamic.

It doesn't matter what grade of fuel is used as the setting will adjust automatically to compensate.
