Best Fuel For Mercs

Thank you Shude , does not this bring up the old problem, that if your car is made to go a little quicker, you drive it faster and loose any possible gain

Quite possibly. A bit more power/torque, or a bit more range ... but not both at the same time!

Using cruise control on the motorway my VW can exceed 30 MPG on V-Power, never above the high 20s on ordinary fuel at the same speed.

I once got about 50mpg out of my C180k... I'd run out of fuel and was driving very very gingerly to the next petrol station. Got a photo of it somewhere :D

I've averaged just over 11 MPG in my VW, towing the caravan in a hurry!

My V70R that averages about 24mpg around here or 25.7 in Herts did 55mpg going to Stansted when I had 2 hours to kill, by doing a constant 40mph

Yes I have been basically hammering it at every opportunity.

bit off track, but i had a tank of V-power diesel recently: much better :bannana: :bannana:
didn't do much for mpg mind, was having too much fun!!

I saw V-Power diesel in Germany in August ... wasn't sure if it was available here or not.

Perhaps it only works in Audis though :D

Vauxhall did a similar thing with their VX200.

Diesel performance has come sooooo far in the past 5 years.

Is there actually ( still ) any difference between Supermarket Fuel and that at usual filling stations. In my immediate vicinty there is Asda, Sainsburys, Shell & Esso? Have been using Sainsburys ( City diesel ) and thought about trying Esso. All their prices are the same, 93.9p/L.

Read somewhere that City was not the best and then in another paragraph it stated there was not much difference between them these days!?

Thanks, confused!

Forgot to mention, Asda sell BP so is their petrol/diesel likely to be any different from the BP Station 5 miles away? Does the particular oil depot play a part in this as well or is that purely logistical distribution to respective retail outlets?

I have never tried chickens, but I will give them a go.:)
Just be careful as they gobble he fuel at an alarming rate and don't put all your eggs in one basket, mix the fuels.

I would have said yes, all cars leave the factory set at an average for all countries, some as low as 92 octane.

Once it was done you could not safely use 95 anymore

This is what I thought when I brought my US VW Corrado back to the UK in the early 90's, so at the first service I asked the VW main dealer to reset the static timing for UK spec'ed Corrado. When I collected the car the service manager told me that the timing was already set to the same spec as UK Corrado and so they didn't have to do this. Based on this I assumed all cars (VW's anyway) left the factory with the same static timing setting leaving the ECU to adapt the timing using the knock sensors.

Interesting, I didn't notice any improvement with V-Power diesel in my E320CDI. In fact if any thing it made it really difficult to start. The starting problem dissapeared after I reverted back to normal Shell diesel after experimenting only one tankfull of V-Power. From my brief experience, V-Power is not worth the extra 7p per litre for my E320CDI. Better to put this money towards a good diesel fuel additive/injector cleaner.

Just my 2p worth...

I buy the cheapest at Morrisons, collect the points and get a £5 voucher to use in store, approx 1 per month.

Have tried the higher grades in the past. Noticed no difference what so ever, other than it costing more. Then, I drive like a tortoise anyway.

In which case you should get more miles per tank - I definitely do with my VW when driving steadily.

Interesting indeed - is your engine EU4 compliant???
that may be the reason.:(

I used to when i first got the merc - first tank of shell regular was noticeably smoother & quieter

I regularly use Sainsbury's City Diesel in my EU3 E320CDI. After reading about BP Ultimate Diesel on this forum I decided to give it a go when I had a nearly empty tank. No change in miles/gallon at all but at 11p a litre more expensive a much larger bill for 65 litres. Needless to say, I'm bank on Sainsbury's best.
